Before and After: Former Playroom Becomes a Comfy Family Room
Cozy furnishings, a marble-topped beverage station and moody paint give the space a more grown-up vibe
Furnishings (after): Designer Leslie Harris-Keane worked to maintain the beautiful French doors and slat ceiling and introduce comfortable seating. Club chairs swivel for easy TV viewing or game play.
Floors: A sisal rug tops original wide-planked hickory wood floors in an espresso stain.
Chairs: Lee Industries; sisal rug and coffee table: Restoration Hardware; pillow fabric: Betwixt, Schumacher; zebra rug: HD Buttercup

Before: The room featured a large brick wall and fireplace that was original to the home, but a square cutout presented an architectural challenge: What to do with it?
Plus, space to the left of the fireplace was underused. A brick shelf was once used as a place for a barbecue when the room was a porch.

After: Harris-Keane filled in the cutout with reclaimed brick.
The mantel: The designer then used a piece of wood from a 100-year-old Ohio barn to create a new, chunkier mantel that helps better break up the brick.
The beam was power washed and a clear coat was added, and the rusty nails and knots were left intact to keep its character.
Harris-Keane covered the small octagonal window with white Shaker-style cabinets.
Beverage station: A honed marble-topped beverage station replaced the space once meant for a barbecue. Old planks from the same barn in Ohio used for the mantel became floating shelves.
A sink, fridge and ice maker complete the drink station.

Paint colors: There wasn’t a lot of wall space to paint, which is why Harris-Keane opted for a rich, dark tone (Benjamin Moore’s Iron Mountain) on the walls and bright white (Benjamin Moore’s Swiss Coffee) on the trim and custom cabinetry to help enhance the brick.
