Archifest 2016: Inside RichardHO Architects' House on Tembeling Road
This restored shophouse pays homage to its history while taking on a contemporary update
Nestled in the quaint neighbourhood of Joo Chiat, this conservation shophouse beautifully blends the old-world charm of its Peranakan heritage with contemporary tropical style. Architect and National University of Singapore professor Richard Ho of RichardHO Architects led the careful restoration of this terrace house, which was appended with an extension at the back of the home. The extension afforded the homeowners more comfortable living and entertaining spaces that are bathed in light and warmth.
Like the many existing terrace houses in the area, this shophouse proudly displays its original ornate facade.
Stepping inside the home, there is an immediate sense of careful restraint on the furnishing to maintain a seamless flow of space. Furniture in both living and dining areas are kept streamlined, allowing the owners’ art collection to provide colour and texture to the pale walls.
A reflecting pond with a skylight above separates the conserved portion of the house from the new three-storey extension at the rear. “This feature is very important as it sets the tone for the whole house – a tranquil haven in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Singapore city,” says Ho.

The original timber floor structure was retained. The dining and console tables in similar wood finish enhance the warm feel.
Glass balustrades on the second storey permit light and air to pervade across the levels, as well as unify the spaces with a modern touch.

Aside from the addition of an ensuite bathroom for the master bedroom, an attic level was also built into the original house. It is accessed via a spiral staircase, which also serves as a sculptural contrast against the straight lines that dominate the house.
“The three-storey extension at the rear is in reinforced concrete construction (as required by Singapore’s fire regulations),” says Ho. The added extension allowed for two more bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, and a roof terrace. The staircase features a steel construction designed to look very light, adds Ho.
The homeowners also enjoy an al fresco lounging area at the rear extension.
Another spiral staircase leads to the roof terrace, which is decked out with wire mesh furniture. These outdoor areas provide the owners with more opportunities to better appreciate the greenery and relaxed lifestyle of their neighbourhood.
