As a space used for lounging, entertaining and more, your living room takes on a range of avatars throughout the day. And so, it’s only fitting that it be given the attention that it deserves. 2019 has seen a surge in modish living room designs, including glass partitions, layered false ceilings, neutral palettes and much more. Which designs are making waves across homes in India? Which ones are most favoured, and why? If you’re dying to know, consider this list of the top seven design trends, as voted by Houzz users.
Ace Associates
1. Sculptural wall murals
Give your living room an upscale art gallery vibe with a 3D wall mural. Murals come in an array of materials, from acrylic and wood to metal and ceramic. Select a palette that complements your decor. For example, if your room is dominated by neutral tones, strike a contrast with bold hues. If you have bold blocks of colour, consider breaking the visual solidity with a delicate mural design.

This living room by Ace Associates makes an intricate foliated wall mural its focal point. Housed in a shallow alcove and bordered by a backlit frame, the display steals the limelight and exudes understated elegance against the boldness of the surrounding design scheme.

Accentuated by daisy backing and frame, a dark seashell-themed mural takes centre stage in this living room. Unlike the previous one-piece design, this mural is composed of separate, standalone elements. The artwork reigns over the busy room with its restrained palette and orderly composition.

2. Glass partitions
Glass partitions can conjure a bright and airy atmosphere by transmitting and multiplying light and blurring boundaries, thereby urging the eye to travel further.

This chic living room, designed by ZERO9, basks in sunlight, thanks to a window on either side of the glass-clad grid partition. The two-way flow of light gives the space a sun-kissed, terrace-like setting.

3. Indoor pocket gardens
Bijou planter arrangements can pose as striking indoor gardens, injecting glimmers of the outdoors into your space.

On the other side of the glass partition pictured in the previous picture, lies this midnight-hued lounge. The deep colours are punctuated by bursts of fresh green by way of planters on either side of the indigo sofa. To the right, a vertical, staggered arrangement of verdant plants takes on the appearance of a petite pocket garden. The verdure provides a fitting juxtaposition against the clean edges, angular cuts and perfectly curated decor.
Sudaiva Studio
Sometimes, all it takes is one plant to whip up a charming pocket garden. See how a square, pebble-filled floor recess acts as an anchor for a tall, lush fern in this living room by Sudaiva Studio.

4. Standalone focal artwork
Love minimalism? Embrace the ‘less is more’ approach for your wall art. Adorn your feature wall with a solo painting, tableau or other artwork.

This muted living room by We Design Studio channels simple sophistication, thanks to its pared-back decor. The framed tapestry highlights the feature wall and mirrors the surrounding taupe palette, while acting as the hero piece of the room.
We Design Studio
Enveloped in ivory and grey, this otherwise subdued living room, also by We Design Studio, gets a vibrant facelift with a large abstract painting on the feature wall. With its bold strokes and arresting colours, the large painting effortlessly rules over the room.

5. Elevated ceilings
Nothing compares with double-height ceilings when it comes to conjuring an illusion of a larger space.

Designed by Inclined Studio, this modish lounge looks up to the roof, courtesy a double-height ceiling that extends across half the room. A wood-panelled walkway squares off the elevation to the right, posing as a sophisticated ceiling platform with recessed lighting.
This drawing room tears up the rule book in the elevated ceiling game. The ceiling is entirely composed of glass, offering an unobstructed view of the sky. The space begs the question, is the sky the ceiling?

6. Layered false ceilings
A layered false ceiling can serve as your pièce de résistance without appearing overbearing.

This lounge by Viaanca Interiors gains eye appeal by way of a layered geometric false ceiling, which also works to anchor the zone. The layers aren’t identically stacked, and the variance provides the look of straight-cut rose petals in full bloom.
CTDC
A CTDC creation, this living room is over-arched by a layered rectangular false ceiling that mirrors the shape and layout of the room. Its subdued look and palette serve as an antidote for the room’s dominant deep palette. With recessed lighting, the ceiling bathes the room in a soft glow.

7. Neutral palettes
White walls and grey sofas — a timeless combination that can seldom go wrong. Neutrals have become increasingly favoured by homeowners this year, and for good reason. Subdued colours have excellent reflective properties that can enhance the natural light in your room and make it feel roomier.

This muted living room by Sunita Yogesh Studio is a lesson in restrained colour. A plethora of dark-toned and wooden accents provide a welcome contrast to the knocked-back shell, giving it a characterful flourish.

These living rooms show why a neutral palette is evergreen
