Nowadays, the space under staircease become open and airy and lack of uses, while traditionally it is used as store rooms. I believe, in Indian context, the staircase should be put in between two bedrooms so each part of the stairs can used as wardrobe/study/store etc. It can also used as toilet or kitchen, as the space under staircase is huge of around 6-8 feet wide and 14-16 length.
