The architecture also inspired classic period details, such as metro tiles in the walk-in shower, hexagonal tiles on the floor and panelling on the walls, honouring the style of the 1930s home. A clear-glass shower door allows the rest of the room to benefit from the window’s natural light. Similarly, the bathroom is separated from the rest of the suite by French doors, which allow the bedroom to benefit from all of the natural light.

Soothing monochromatic neutrals provide a good backdrop for personal touches. ‘The wife has really great taste, and her picks really warm up the space,’ Patterson says. These include the antique table, oriental rug and basket for towels. This new window with an arched transom replaced the window seen in the previous photo. Patterson made bouncing lots of natural light around the space a priority.Chandelier: The Big Chandelier; sconces: Belle Sconce, Pottery Barn (discontinued); pedestal sinks: Elizabethan Classics; faucets: Colonial in polished chrome, Jado; mirrors: Pottery BarnSee more dazzling white bathrooms

Switch your shower trayIf creating a wet room isn’t an option, a good alternative is a slimline shower tray. There are lots available, and their low profile makes a sleek addition to a contemporary bathroom. It may also be possible to recess a tray slightly into the floor of the bathroom, for a totally seamless finish.

Work in a wet roomIn small bathrooms, waterproofing the entire space to create a wet room can give you the freedom to use a layout that wouldn’t otherwise be possible. In this chic wash space, a super-slim sliver of glass is all that separates the shower and basin. The shower itself sits snugly in the corner, in an arrangement where a normal shower tray would look cramped.

Display on bespoke shelvingMost of us are always clamouring for more storage, and this canny bathroom utilises every last inch of space, with bespoke shelving fitted into every teeny nook and skinny alcove. The simple chunks of wood look smart against the white background, too.

Crave consistencyMake decorating easier by sticking to two or three themes for each room. In this mesmerising basin area, cement tiles have been taken from floor to wall for a seamless splashback. Grey and brass are its other key elements. A more measured approach is especially important when factoring in a fantastic pattern, as here.Browse tiles for eclectic interiors in the Houzz Shop
