Millienair 10 Part 2
The wall-to-wall joinery in the children’s rooms features a metallic white laminate with graduated green laminate drawers and are a standout feature. The green-hued drawers adorned with anodised orange handles with Laminex in Pomegranate internal carcass colour is one of Scott’s favourite features and gives a great visual pop of colour.
Colour-block sunshine yellowThe main reason this surprise hit of colour is so good? It’s the way it effortlessly elevates the standard single bed. The other reasons it gets the thumbs-up? Firstly, it brings another dimension to the neutral space; secondly, it’s a design decision that was reached by thinking outside the box – literally. Extending the colour block around the corner, so it covers just a sliver of the other wall, is clever, as it ‘wraps’ the bed for a cocooning effect.
Perk up your tiles with pinkYes, it’s back to the kitchen (and pink), but this unexpected touch of colour just had to be shown. Who knew grout came in such a pretty shade? And who knew it would work so well? The pink highlights the brick formation of the tiles and turns the otherwise ordinary splashback into a feature. See, simple things can make a big difference.Have you used a surprise hit of colour in your home that’s made a big difference? If you have, show or tell us in the Comments section.
Brave a rainbow of brightsYellow, fuchsia, brilliant baby blue – definitely not the norm for shelving, but spot-on in this stylish room that works on so many levels: from the different-sized shelving, which adds visual interest, to the way the shelves coordinate with the sofa and soft furnishings. Imagine if the storage weren’t multi-coloured – it would just look a little flat, wouldn’t it? If painting your shelving is going to be a DIY job, any surface is paintable (including laminate, gloss and factory finishes) as long as you use the the right primer. With the materials mentioned, an adhesion primer is best. More ways to get standout shelves
Will I need to add supports? You can pretty much remove or create an opening in any wall in your home; the main differential is that the more load the wall is taking, the larger the steelwork will need to be to replace it. To assess this, you’ll need to engage a structural engineer. There are two structural elements your engineer may suggest. The first is a beam, which is placed horizontally directly under the element of the house that’s now in need of support to replicate the support work the wall was doing. The other is a column, which is placed vertically – usually to hold up the ends of a beam when the existing walls are not capable of spreading this point load. Together they form a ‘goal post’ structure.Get ideas for how to work around a structural pillar in your kitchen extension
Where do I start? The first stage of any project is to determine a brief. Ask yourself: What am I trying to achieve? To help you clarify this, consider what the function of your new area will be, what the budget is, and whether you’re looking for a greater sense of space, to bring more light into the room, or to create a family room or kitchen-living room?Once you’ve figured out your criteria, then ensure you’re making the best use of the space you’re generating. At this point, seek professional advice, as this will provide you with plans of what you’re intending to do.7 sensitive and creative period home kitchen extensions
A giant contemporary window rubs along with traditionFrench doors can go a long way to maintaining the ‘old’ feel of a period home. And, as demonstrated in this extension by Paul Archer Design, you don’t have to choose between traditional and contemporary – you can mix the two to great effect.Again, a very open side return extension has been added, providing more space without introducing a dominant visual statement.
Take talks over housework seriously“It’s not surprising that housework is one of the top four or five things people argue about,” says Relationships Australia practice leader David Roberts. With two partners often both working and busy – and some juggling parenting responsibilities on top – Roberts says talking through housework expectations is vital for a harmonious household.“Couples with different backgrounds can often have very different expectations, and so the ability to communicate well and without judgement in the discussion is really important,” he says. “Poor communication, along with finances and infidelity, are among the top reasons for divorce, so open discussion and exploration are vital.”
Lesson 1: How to go greenerThis new-build home’s interior was revisited to create a contemporary and individual scheme – and one that brought the outside in. Making a place for greenery included this clever solution: a purpose-made shelf behind the sofa for a row of Sansevieria trifasciata, or mother-in-law’s tongue. Even cleverer, the smart containers keep the plants watered when the owners are on their frequent travels. Another lesson to take from this living space? The selection of a corner sofa and round wood coffee table makes for a cosy ambience in a high-ceilinged new home. See more of this architect-designed house

Colour blocking was used toidentify the shower compartment and create a vibrant yet Zen-like backdrop to the space. Architect-designed mosaic tiled shower shelves were custom-made and really add a point of difference to the bathroom, although there was some doubt on the client’s behalf about the use of small tiles. ‘The client had heard of tiles popping off and mould issues when we suggested mosaic tiles. The myth was expelled when we showed previous projects and how it is prevented by using the correct installation and finishing method with an epoxy grout.’
