Bathroom
We do NOT want a HUGE bathroom space. That takes away from its warmth, relaxation and sanctuary feel for us. And the ostentatiousness of a large space dedicated to a bathroom makes us feel uncomfortable.
Bill also showers after his bike commutes, so a thick walled glass shower... perhaps something without a door, and seamless to the floor would be terrific. A transom window, letting light into the space through the shower could be really neat, or a skylight.
There is a stick rack that we've used for years to hang our clothes on beside the tub, made by an artist at the farmers' market. We'd like to continue using that (see the idea book with furniture we want to work in for a pic & dimensions).
Ideally, the tub area has a door to limit intrusions. Our current tub flows from the bedroom with no door and it has made for less than tranquil, candle-lit bathing sessions.
re: TRAVEL CUPBOARD: Our current bathroom has a deep drawer for travel items. And our current closet has shelving up high where we store suitcases against the ceiling. We travel a fair amount, and I'd like to see a travel cupboard in, around or near the master bedroom (where we would pack for a trip), somewhere that can hold our suitcases, along with our travel gear.... everything from noise cancelling headphones and iphone/ipad travel bases to toothbrush and shampoo containers, our travel kitchen kit, suitcase weigher, first aid kit, pelican camera case, pelican computer case, make-up bags, carry-on luggage, overnight bags, etc.
Our vision:
1) LOTS of natural materials (wood, stone).
2) Lots of light (so lighter, maybe even white walls, pot lights, glass walls, skylight etc.)
3) Perhaps colour choices to tie in the painting over our bed to make the space flow & our bedroom to make it flow into the bathroom space.
4) Wood materials used to pick up the wood furniture in the bedroom to help the entire bedroom-bathroom space flow well.
5) If the laundry is downstairs, a laundry chute.
6) A high bathroom counter... our current "normal" one is too low and we have to bend too far to spit while brushing our teeth. A higher counter would be nicer for Bill's shaving too. And it would give a bit more storage underneath.
7) No pedestal sink; no open shelving under the sink... think optimizing storage in a small space & hiding clutter.
Like the tub shape & thin-ness of its walls.
Interesting tub... like a built in meets a clawfoot. I really like its depth and narrowness. Having a ledge around would be handy, especially for candles. Like that there's a window with some privacy still. It would be a lovely spot for indoor plants to soften the look and bring the outside in.
This bathroom has lots of natural light. Warmth in the ceiling wood. Like the barn board tile on the walls... its grain, colour, visual texture & weathered wood look. The tub is wonderful. The thick glass walled shower, beautiful. It's not a huge space.... so its not ostentatious. It is modern/contemporary, but warmed up with nature. Like the way the cabinetry picks up the ceiling wood & the white counters pick up the tub & 2 walls, and the floor choice is neutral enough to not distract from the awesome wall tile.
Like the counter with the built in sinks & their rectangular shape... like the white over the wood, like the floating cupboards, like the light coming into the space through the window in the shower, like the thickness of the counter, like the plain mirror panel, like the grey floor tile that continues through the shower space, like the thick glass of the shower wall with its minimal wall attachment brackets. Really like the tile on the wall & floor. Like the doorless glass panelled shower. Like that the window is part of the shower. Like the thickness of the sink & its cabinetry (would like it to mimic whatever we do in the kitchen). Would want the cupboards to be drawers rather than hinged pull down openings. This is the perfect size... 2 drawers a piece plus a cupboard for the bulky TP & kleenex extras. Like that they are floating though, as it gives the illusion of space. Like the rectangular nature of the sink. Not sure about the taps coming out of the wall. Rectangular sinks need to be deep enough not to splash.
Like the clean modern lines. Like the white ceiling & flooring & fixtures. Love the dark grey & wood and the rectangles through the grey tiling on the wall... and then there's the greenery outside being brought into the space through those magnificent windows. And all the natural light.
White mosaic tile would be great in a shower with its sparkle
