Fretwork on cabinetry can sometimes be confused with tracery. Fretwork is an interlaced decorative design, carved into a solid background or cut out. Unlike tracery, fretwork doesn't usually have glass inserts. Originally fretwork was in a grid and lattice design. These days we see many different designs, from patterns that copy the rectangular Greek fret to more intricately intertwined patterns. The cost depends on the design — using MDF and painting the unit yourself can lower the cost.

Dark Khaki color on walls, shiny tile floor doors with arches, whote against khaki, door hanldes, cabinets and round mirros with sconces - pretty much everything. Natural lighting in bath too - important for make up application

Barrel vaulted ceiling with ceiling changing over sink area. A soaking tub is the centerpiece of this charming bathroom. The ceiling vault and large window give emphasis to the tub while allowing the vanity to be a more intimate area with a lower ceiling. The beadboard finish of the ceiling is a nice touch as it softens the formality of the room just enough.

Putting electricity in the cabinet box can be a nice touch as well — if you want to keep hair dryers, toothbrushes and other necessities ready to go. Having a custom vanity design can help you consider all of the small details that often get overlooked, like features that work whether you're left-handed or right-handed. Of course, choosing your vanity materials, style and design has a lot to do with how you feel about your home, too. A custom-designed vanity in the master bathroom of your "forever home" might make sense, but a store-bought vanity could work just fine in the guest bathroom of a home you plan to sell down the road.

Greige. A made-up color, but important enough to mention because I use it so much. A soft gray with beige undertones that is a perfect complement to most white marbles, such as Calacatta. It's a great solution for those who feel gray is too cold. This elegant bathroom is painted in my favorite greige, Benjamin Moore's Revere Pewter HC-172.

Shower seating doesn't need to look like it belongs in a hospital. If you are renovating your shower, ask the builder to frame out a seat ready for tiling. In smaller showers, a corner seat will take less room. Tip: If you don't have the room or budget for built-in seating, a small stool constructed from a waterproof material like stone is a thoughtful addition to any shower. How to Settle on a Shower Bench

Q

Photo

When designing your bench, you should have a strong opinion on whether you want the bench to move around or stay stationary. This built-in bench is one of my favorite designs and makes for easy cleaning. Because it extends out of the shower, there's no gap between the bench and the glass. Those small gaps can be a pain to clean. Tip: For even less cleaning, consider a solid surface material, such as granite or composite stone, for your bench.

3. Eight-inch-spread faucet. One of the most popular styles today, the 8-inch-spread faucet (also measured from one handle center to the other) comes in many styles and materials. From metal to marble to crystal, the options are almost endless. You can find an 8-inch-spread faucet in popular finishes (such as brushed nickel, oil-rubbed bronze and the ever-popular gold) and some not-so-popular ones (such as polished nickel and matte black).

Task lighting wattage in the powder room. Task lights in powder rooms can have much less wattage (think 45-watt range), as this is not a space where anyone will be performing the morning ritual. Lower wattage provides a softer, relaxing ambience for guests. Find a color temperature that makes the room feel inviting and illuminates guests in the most attractive way. How lighting affects interior colors

Q

Ambient Light This acts as fill light. “In bathrooms with taller ceilings, a cove or cantilever details, ambient lighting fixtures can be installed along the perimeter of the space," Whitehead says. "Architectural details such as these can hide the fixture and create indirect lighting.” A pendant fixture with a translucent shade can be a source of both decorative and ambient light.
