Barn door mirrors. The designers did not want to choose between having vanity mirrors or external windows, so they kept both. They did this by installing mirrors that could slide to reveal the windows. Because it was difficult to find hardware for the mirrors, the team hired a local iron fabricator to make a blackened-steel rail and frames.
Valdez specified a slab of marble-look quartz to create the curb for the dog wash station. “I love using slabs of quartz for shower curbs, because they don’t require any grout lines,” the designer says. The entire back wall of the laundry room is covered in marble-look porcelain tiles. “It was difficult to find the right spot to stop the tile behind the dog wash station, so we decided to cover the entire wall with it,” Valdez says. “The homeowners have reported it was the right decision because water gets all over the wall when they wash their dogs.”
Backsplash Tapered blue-gray tile goes from countertop to ceiling on two walls. The tiles offer a bit of color that complements the warm wood tones, and their shape recalls that of leaves, which connects the kitchen to the backyard. The White Macaubas quartzite countertop features a linear grain that works well with the patterns on the cabinets. The angled island top offers something different, in a shape befitting the midcentury era.
On the floor plan, you can see how the team worked the glass corner into the plumbing wall of the shower stall. You can also see how the staircase and hallway look right into the bathroom. And for you “Where’s the toilet?” players, you can see that it’s behind the door. The closet and laundry area shown here was another part of this project. Starphire glass
Glass corner of shower surround The stall’s glass corner (at left in photo) is a small yet important detail. It extends only about 10 inches before hitting drywall, which was necessary to house the plumbing. “This glass corner added more transparency,” Johnson says. The alternative was a solid wall that would have chopped up the room.
