It comes at a price, though, she adds. COURSING PATTERN It’s important to understand how any pattern will look in your space, says Kali Robledo, social media manager for Fireclay Tile. She suggests getting samples from your tile supplier and putting them in the space. Homeowners should also do a mock-up on a large sheet of paper, sketching out a scaled version of the pattern, or use a designer who can provide a digital rendering.
etA ARCHITECTURE SaveEmail Coursing. Color and an alternative layout blend to create a subtle textile-like design called coursing, says Daniel Ewald of etA Architecture. Subway tiles are offset and alternate in color to look like a basket or textile weave. This is a moderately more complicated pattern, with three colors of 2-by-8-inch tiles. The design does require careful alignment and installation, Ewald says. Homeowners should make sure the installers are comfortable with it, and they should expect to pay more for the work. This smart custom solution provides front-accessible shelves that simply slide out of sight when not in use (and a handy towel hook to boot). Before your cabinetmaker builds the shelves, consider what you’ll store on them to ensure that they have enough height. If you’re trying to give the impression of a bigger bathroom, you could paint the cabinets the same shade as the walls, or consider tiling the area if your tile shape and size permit.
Marble inserts support shelves in the bathroom, but even here, wood is everywhere. “Most clients usually hesitate when it comes to using wood paneling in the bathroom,” Gianpaolo says. “But if the wood is properly treated in a way that allows it to breathe, wood can be in contact with water without undergoing any modifications in color or appearance and without deteriorating. “Wood and water can live together perfectly,” he says. “If this were not true, boats wouldn’t float, and Venice, a city kept above water by wooden poles, would have sunk long ago.”

The flooring on the main level is large-format porcelain Italian tile that resembles concrete. “We are using these all the time with our clients these days,” Ronderos says. “They are durable and can handle a lot of foot traffic, they don’t absorb stains, they are easy to clean and they will last a long time.”

Ambience. “In 2016, there will be less focus on utility and more on creating ambience,” Crawshaw says. The bathroom is no longer purely functional, but also a place to escape to, and this will be seen in the move toward custom furniture-like cabinetry, mood lighting, feature faucets and the seamless integration of key functional elements.

Double showers will grow in popularity in 2016, Dee says, specifically a setup that consists of an oversized rain shower head and separate handset, as seen here, rather than dual shower heads mounted on the same rail or bar.
