Off-the-Wall Mirrors

Mirrors: they're not just for bathrooms anymore.

While they have a practical purpose, mirrors are also a fantastic decorative element. For one thing, they're a blank slate. They work with all different styles of frames, and in rooms of all different looks.

Plus, not only are they style chameleons, mirrors are also active participants in a room's shape and lighting. Want to elongate a room? Make it seem brighter? More vertical? There's a mirror to solve your problem.

And of course, they're great anytime you need a quick hair fix or a lipstick check. Can't underestimate the importance of that!

Here are some of my favorite non-traditional uses of mirrors:

And these mirrrored countertops, in Miles Redd's old kitchen, ARE traditional mirrors. While they're not incredibly practical, they certainly are sexy.

These stainless cabinets aren't mirrors in the traditional sense, but they do offer some reflection that keeps this narrow kitchen a little brighter than it might otherwise be.

This little mirrored sidetable is a perfect complement to white bedding and a dark lamp. Plus, I love it with the green of the wall - it's a modern space, but the mirror gives it a bit of a retro feel.

Mirrors are a fantastic alternative to traditional art on a mantle. They keep a room bright and add to the spacious feeling. While sometimes a really big painting can overwhelm a room, a really big mirror keeps the space open.

I like this vignette for similar reasons, though it's a more modern, less overtly girly look overall. Both spaces, though, show off the great combination of a mirrored table, black and white accessories and simple flowers.

I love this for the same reason I like the first room in this book - it's got a pretty femininity that's a little fussy but not overly so. I love the lines of the table and the way the mirror works with the swirls of the wallpaper.

This is another great example of propping a mirror to use it to great effect. Hanging this mirror would look just a little more formal, but propping it softens the modern, spare room.

I love the symmetry of paired mirrors, and I also love the look of mirrors leaned against the wall. It creates a long, vertical look that opens up the space. Plus, gazing into a mirror set at an angle is so flattering (dressing room designers: take note)!

These sharp chrome sink bases are modern and sleek - quite opposite the feminine frill of the photo above. Mirrors ARE chameleon-like - depending on their style, they can accentuate the modernity or retro charm of a space.

Yes, there's a mirror on the wall here. But it's just above a great mirrored table. I love the overall look - it's feminine and shimmery.
