Lamps
Keep bright light out of your eyes at night by avoiding bedside lamps or pendant lights with clear glass shades or visible bulbs that create glare. Also make sure shades are about equal to your eye level when sitting or leaning in bed. Recessed downlights above the bed can push intense light directly to your retina and negatively affect sleep cycles, so use them carefully and always on dimmers set to the lowest usable setting.
Poul Henningsen didn’t have electricity growing up in Denmark, and while designing his ingenious light fixtures, he fondly remembered the soft glow of the gas lamps of his youth. He experimented with concentric tiers of metal bands in an effort to direct light to just the right spot, distribute it evenly and reduce glare. The work resulted in his highly successful PH collection for Louis Poulsen. His elaborate Artichoke pendant light of 1958 illuminates the kitchen island in this new custom house in Vancouver, British Columbia, by design-build firm Kerr Construction and Design. In the seating area to the left is a glimpse of a sofa that Danish architect-designer Finn Juhl created in 1951 for Michigan’s Baker Furniture. Juhl was inspired by abstract painters and often worked with teak. The wood — inexpensive and readily available at the time due to military clearing exercises in Southeast Asia — is a hallmark of Danish modern furniture.

In addition to the skylight, illumination comes from this custom light designed by the client. The client drew up the design and gathered the materials from Black Market Furniture, the same company that made the vanity and shelving unit. Then, the project’s electrician helped him put it all together and hang it from the ceiling.
