The shower controls are mounted on the opposite wall from the shower head. “So you don’t have to get wet when you turn the shower on,” Myers says. “I also think it adds a nice balance or symmetry to the shower.”

While some homeowners are seeking to lose the bathtub, designer and homeowner Leyla Jaworski added one during her renovation of her home in Sacramento, California. This involved expanding the bathroom into what had been part of the hallway. “The only way to capture the space was to move the washer into the garage and put the tub in the shower,” she says. Incorporating a free-standing tub also enabled the designer to use deck-mounted fixtures, which are “significantly cheaper” than floor-mounted fixtures, she says. Landlocked bathroom with no natural light. A tiny bathroom with no window: It’s a double whammy. And it can feel even smaller if the lighting scheme is dark and gloomy. Solution: LED downlights are an energy-efficient option for bathrooms and will safely light up the wet areas as well as provide task lighting over the basin. It’s also important to consider the ambience in windowless rooms that don’t benefit from soft, natural light. Having a couple of bathroom wall lights on either side of a mirror will balance out the bright overheads and offer a more flattering welcome first thing in the morning.
