Reply to: Well I am doing the same type of project. I have a bench that I bought from an antique store. There is cain on the back and the sides. Someone spray painted it black! I did get a paint remover in a can at Home Depot. It is a spray on in a gold can. It says it only takes 15 min. This stuff is great! Sorry I don't remember the name but it is in the paint section. I have gotten most of the paint off. I also used a soft wire brush after I wiped off the paint with a rag.The problem I am having is in the crevaces, but I think it will be ok. I hope that it will cause the cane to look even more antiquish (word?). I'm spray painting the wood part of the bench a shiny black. I have a cushion I reupholstered (my first try) that is gold and black. Anyway, good luck with the project.

Reply to: I have had great success removing paint from glass, tile and wood with a product called Goof Off. Lowes and HD both carry it. Try it in a small inconspicuous spot first to see if it takes off the finish. I've never had it take off wood stain, but I've never tried it on cane.

Reply to: Use a fine sanding block. Little damage and the spongy block gets into crevices easier than regular sandpaper.

Reply to: I used fine sandpaper on cane and it worked. Just go lightly and slowly. I then stained it and it turned out great.

Reply to: Paint chips, thank you for your reply. And no, I don't think it's a crazy idea. In fact, I was thinking of staining it brown if anything else fails. I'm just worried that it might ruin the caning. But since you reinforced that idea... I'm going to try to sand it first with a kitchen sponge. It might work:) Thanks again.
