If you are open to changing the rest of the furniture I think you can work around the recliner. You need to choose smaller, less dark, pieces. Adding a carpet would also help.

My friends neighborhood in Malibu has a number of mid century modern homes where the neighbors have filled in their interior courtyards and I absolutely love that it opens up the house and you can pass through that area instead of having to go around it. I have no pictures of those but there are plenty of spaces like this where clearly they filled in at Courtyard.

I will bet the ranch you will shrink the courtyard or eliminate unless no other green space, so I'd not change any slider that didn't scream failure. Assuming you will not love that kitchen : (
