Not sure if it's a shadow, but it looks like some of the tiles are slightly different shades of white and light gray, which is kinda neat.

Love the herringbone! It's still the same subway tile, so I think you can order a few and just see if you like it in straight rows or in a different pattern.

Might be worthwhile getting something like this that's similar to traditional subway tile but less long, just to see how it looks. Because you don't have a very long wall, the normal 12" tiles may seem too big.
