Reply to: We had one wall between bathroom and office (has shower supply and toilet pipes) retrofitted with 3/4 sheetrock and "Green Glue" and the decrease in plumbing sound transmission was amazing. A major problem was that the first drywall was not properly installed - it was attached top and bottom and taped and mudded, making a very nice large speaker surface. So they attached the first layer correctly, we did the "Green Glue caulk" around the edges of the wall and door to fill the gaps, then they did the second layer with the Green Glue, taped, mudded and caulked that. Next step is to replace the wall's ill-fitting hollow door with a properly fitted solid one. Waiting until the framing is done to start talking about sound control is late - the most effective methods like double studs and mass damping materials are installed with the framing and the plans have to take their thickness into account.

Reply to: We were very concerned about noise mitigation for our build so the house was designed with insulation batts in all walls and ceilings, double 5/8" drywall ceilings, acoustic putty on outlets and switch boxes and we only have recessed lighting in the kitchen. We didn't stagger studs, though. Right now, we are at the stage of doors and trim being installed and it is very quiet when we walk around the house. When I'm upstairs, I can barely hear people who are talking downstairs and that's without the doors closed, rugs and window treatments. The cost of quiet rock would have been astronomical so we didn't use it. Nevertheless, we feel pretty confident that our bedrooms will be quiet.
