What you have done is pretty. But since the lower and upper portions are in line, it is all the more important that the mantle have some detail and height...so it doesn't look like a narrow line bisecting the rectangle that goes from floor to ceiling. I think it can be done inexpensively. Show the moulding store the mantle in your inspiration picture and I bet they will help you find the trim pieces you need. We did just that and asked a lot questions and ended up with a beautiful mantle. If you aren't handy I think it would be worth it to pay someone to build it. Your fireplace will be beautiful!
