Hi izzydixie.....the sconces give off plenty of light, but I think for very detailed work, they might not give off enough light because they have shades. Maybe a bare bulb would do better, but I like the softer light from a shaded fixture for the bathroom. We also have recessed cans above each vanity as well as wiring for a chandelier in the center of the room and a couple of other cans over the tub and three cans in the shower....so there is plenty of light in the evening! I also have a lighted vanity mirror hanging on the wall for close up viewing and that's actually where I put on my makeup. Sconces were Feiss...
