If you can use solar lighting, it is far less expensive. You can look at Costco's landscape lighting for ideas/costs. The low voltage lighting options can become costly, depending upon brand/style. Are you looking to do spotlights, in ground lights, how many lights, etc.? You can get some idea by looking at lighting companies that sell landscape lighting. Having this work done professionally adds greatly to the cost, and varies dramatically, dependent upon your location.

Thanks... good insights... would like to do some in ground and spot lighting... not particularly fond of solar lighting as they eventually cloud up and stop working

Like @RL said, be careful opting for cheaper big-box store fixtures - they can often lead to bigger headaches than the results are worth!

You'd be surprised at the quality and affordability of lights you can get from a factory-direct manufacturer (some may even offer higher quality solar options as well)! And even with a smaller budget, chances are you could increase the ambiance, beauty, and utility of your back-yard/patio with just a few properly placed professional-grade fixtures!
