thanks! I know I get too matchy-matchy since I get nervous going too colorful hence the matching couch and loveseat, so I agree I need a little more color elsewhere. That artwork is going as well, it was a temp fix but I agree it is awful haha! I like the idea too of the lamp, thanks for the tips

You have a nice start! Your rug will need to be subtle (not busy) since the drape pattern is so busy. Once you get the rug home, the patterns tend to "scream" for attention. A rug that is larger than the current one, so the room will look larger.

You could add large art, and/or pull the sofa out from the wall so you could add a console table (about 12" deep x 60" long). A console table would allow you to add a reading lamp or perhaps an indoor plant. See below where we added a console table behind the sofa.

This room is more traditional than yours, but it provides a visual of larger art.

thank you so much!! Yes def a bigger rug is the plan. This was a starter apt so everything was just a mess to get us a by, but now that it will be my fiancé and I's place, I want to upgrade. I have considred simpler curtains in a shade of white with a simple pattern. Do you think I could go with a blue toned carpet? Or should I stick with a gray?

I would price drapes to see whether you want to invest in them, since your current drapes could work.

More important issues are larger art and better lamps, if possible a better/larger/more interesting cocktail table. I always recommend going in order of priority. Also, an overall plan & budget helps people to stay on track.

Great start! And so exciting to have your fiance moving in! Do you have the budget to paint the walls lighter? I think that would make the biggest impact and improvement. Taupe and grey are always a challenging combination to work with.

If painting isn't in the budget, I would stick to a rug that's warm, creamy and textural, rather than patterned, something like this :-)
