RESIDENTIAL: The Dehradun House
The Dehradun House, formerly 'Brentwood Estate', was already fifty years old when it was purchased in the 1940s. It was an old English house, constructed in mud garra, and made up of a warren of small rooms. In the late 1960's, barring the retaining of one outer wall of the Master Bedroom, the house was completely re-built and re-styled by the present incumbent. The new facade was planned with a cantilevered porch and buttresses clad in local river stones. The long drive-way, flanked by orchards of litchi and jackfruit trees, is covered with local ‘bajri' - a common feature of all old Dehradun houses. Breakfast and lunches are a moveable meal, depending on the weather, the sun and the mood!
The centrally sited Front Verandah, from which lead off the Master Bedroom and the Living Room, is the hub of most activities and is a congregation place for family and friends. Regrettably, the refurbished cane and teakwood
armchairs are the only items that have survived, over the many years the many termite attacks, the earthquakes and the cloud bursts.
The Front Verandah is the place for sorting out baskets of vegetables, fruit, lentils and sundry food items.
In the most recent major renovations of the entire house, done by Kohelika Kohli, The Living Room has the single TV of the House where the family gathers to watch movies - a shared family passion.
In the Rear Verandah, which is now an extension of the Living and Dining Rooms, is a large Victorian armoire which was originally designed for hanging coats. It has now been converted into a functional bar by Kohelika.
