RESIDENTIAL: The Baroda House
The Amins, Pranav and Barkhas residence is set in the centre of
Vadodara in Gujarat. It has a footprint of over 24,000 sq. ft, within
a family plot of seven acres. This particular house is set amidst a
two acre verdant garden with a variety of trees.
The low-key brick building was designed by Goa-based architect,
Ini Chatterjee. Pranav’s brief to him had been simple, “ We didn’t
want anything ornate. We wanted a design that made interesting
use of space, light and water.” Initially they thought it would take
two to three years, but the basic structure took six years to
construct. In contrast to the simple architecture, the Amins wanted
an interior designer cum architect who, in their words, could “take
the house to the next level.” Fortunately, they selected me, after
doing their due diligence, as one is a trained architect, interior
designer and a furniture manufacturer. We worked well and
creatively together.
The house sits low, in relation to the horizon. The public spaces
are all on the ground floor. These open onto the gardens on one
side and a water body on the other, which seemingly hugs the
property and curves almost sensuously around it. The private
spaces are all located on the first floor. The architectural layout of
this house is L-shaped, with a staircase in the centre. This
maximizes the views and takes advantage of the movement of the
sun. Spatially and functionally, keeping in mind the clients lifestyle, we
connected the Bar and the Living Room. We opened them out to
the gardens on one side and a courtyard by the water body, on
the other side. The light and the views from the Living Room are
phenomenal and encompass the entire property.
The design approach, from the beginning, was a contemporary
and holistic one. The designs, although contemporary and global,
are rooted in our own deep Indian cultural design sensibilities and
ethos. And yet, they are detached from any specific period or
style. We, that is K2India as a company, is always evolving and is
well-aware of global trends. We always endeavor to culturally
reflect, however subtly, the city or country we are working in. We
customize creatively and judiciously. With our residential projects,
we are very clear that we are there to create homes and not
houses to be admired from a distance. The space must have a
soul and an aura and must be a culmination of spaces that allows
people to evolve, to grow and to enjoy. The scale of everything
becomes important in achieving this. Every detail is carefully
looked at - from the creation of the architectural scale and the
volume, to the selection of the bedside table lamps. With attention
to every detail, we managed to achieve our desired results. But,
the only result that really matters to me is the satisfaction on a
clients face, when the project is handed over...because I like to
believe that we are a team that thinks three dimensionally, from
the very commencement of a project. Working with the Amins was
a creatively fulfilling and pleasurable experience.
