Kosh Residence

A residence for an avid reader and a gardening, DIY and culinary enthusiast. Our brief was made exciting by the personal interests of the house owners. Both in their late 50s, they gave Freehand Studio the freedom to rework the layouts, design cabinetry and a few bespoke pieces, suggest materials and finishes.

The project architects, Mozaic Design and Playgroup Studio gave us exciting canvas to work on. We commenced the design exercise at the stage when the new wing of the house was a shell with a pitched roof.

Our contributions to the project included space planning, planning of services, material selection, detailing, selection of furniture and furnishings, design of a few bespoke pieces, lighting and decor inputs.

Some of the bigger layout changes were:
1. We created a vestibule cum entrance between the formal and family quarters. This provided a moment of pause as you enter the space, and holds storage for shoes.
2. Kitchen and workshop areas were reimagined as a farmhouse kitchen to better suit the clients needs as she experiments with farming, food and craft. This interesting mix needed some shared spaces and some separation between the kitchen that served the formal dining and workshop that now sit on either side of the kitchen.
3. Another major layout change was the redesigning of the 'den' into a library space. We opened up the space which was earlier designed to be divided into office and reading space.
4. The second bedroom was reworked to provide for wheel chair access.

The house was installed with 2 large sliding screens to act as separators between the bedroom and library; and workshop and passage. These define the spaces better, and yet remain visually light as they disappear into pocket walls.

The clients were clearly not keen on reductivism but inclined to colors and patterns. On the other hand the architecture was modern and clean. We tried to bridge this gap by suggesting mid century interiors. This brought the spaces and lifestyle together well.
