White Lodge

White Lodge Concept Note
Chic, classy and contemporary, this apartment is a 3-bedroom holiday home to an NRI client who wanted a fresh look – much like a hotel – that was ready to plug and play when she visits with her family. An Indian herself, her home in North America has a more classic and opulent look and feel with Indian accents. So her brief to us was to do the opposite – to create a space that was modern and clean lined with a big emphasis that she must feel like she is walking into a stylishly designed hotel that had only the things she absolutely needs (in terms of furniture) for a short, convenient and hassle free stay in Bangalore.

Most clients want to pack in more than that is possible and many desire a warm and cozy look. So when this project came our way, we knew it was a green light to design it as we wish; in other words, take big risks that would otherwise be vetoed by other clients. The biggest challenge was to effortlessly integrate the beige marble floor (which came with the apartment) into our black and white concept for the sleek and contrasting look. The second biggest challenge was to really use the concept ‘less is more’ – in other words we were challenged to use minimal styling but still make the space cozy.

The entrance has two high back chairs that sit against a gauze-like wallpapered wall. The whole set up is lit by semi-modern chandelier. A small narrow passage connect this quasi-opulent foyer to massive living and dining spaces that boast high ceilings. Unlike feature walls and quirky furniture for highlights, the highlight here is a lavish curtain with an abstraction of newspaper print – a bold statement in and of its own. And unlike the clichéd set up of a formal and an informal living room which this huge space can accommodate, a single arrangement of four solid white sofas from Ligne Roset and grey Scandinavian styled single seaters were chosen. These act as colour blocks to offset the black and white newspaper print. Rust vintage rugs with a little distressed grey perfectly bridge the warmness of the beige marble floor with the cool starkness of the blacks and whites of the curtain and the furniture. Lots of different types of lights are used to create a variety of moods. The architectural lights create even tone, the back-lit lazer cut Jali on either side of the fixed window creates delicate shadows and the larger-than-life floor lamp emanates soft and romantic light.

On the opposite side, the dining table’s base consisting of an array of slanting lines and the multiplicity of the foam circles above of the dining lights create a play of geometry. Leaning mirrors on one side not only reflect the black leather console and cabinet, but also create an illusion of space doubling the natural light flowing in from the two sides.

The bedrooms are minimal and warm with neutral upholstered beds and complementary lacquered furniture with only subtle colour coming through from the wallpaper and rugs.

Clutter free with minimalistic yet functional furniture, this apartment has the best of both worlds – the clean and neat look of a hotel and the personal touch and bespoke feel of a home.
