Roopa and Ravi's Residence

Context
This three-story home sits within a prestigious gated community near the old airport road in Bangalore. The architecture is classical and each home has a garden adjacent to it. The surrounding landscape is lush and the roads are cobblestone.

Brief
At first, the clients were very keen on a tropical Indian home that was to take inspiration from Indian-folk elements. After several meetings with us and some travel on their own, they realized that the concept they had in mind would be recognizably incongruous with the soft and classical architecture. So after deliberation and ideas from us they become excited about a neo-classical mid century modern home.

Response
Keeping the client’s initial requirement of colorfulness and the new direction of Washington DC’s White House style interiors, we decided to keep the shell warm and neutral with cornice detailing on grey-beige walls. The entire flooring of the house is wood only broken by vintage pattern tiles in the dining-kitchen area. The staircase is also solid wood with white railings. The overall look and feel resembles an English style home. Furniture, art and fabrics fulfill the colour requirement of the client. The living room has a Chester inspired white sofa and a pair or coral chairs. The center table is wood with pastels flowers. The art picks up colours from a bold colorful blind behind the sofa. On the opposite double height wall, an oversized arched mirror reflects the imitation tin silver leafed celling and the flowing chain chandelier. On the left is the dining room. On top of the pattern tiles that have soft and muted pastel colours, is an old rosewood Chettinad table and eight chairs sourced from a local antique store. These have been refurbished by a local artist to give them a new life. A teal kitchen lifts the area and exudes coolness. The powder room is clad with floral wallpaper and the impression of the steps on the celling has been hand-painted to match the walls. A Victorian vanity sits against it. Each landing is clad with panels that have black and white pictures of the family and also camouflage the DB behind them. The living family room upstairs speaks of understated elegance with safe green colours paired with beige. The triptych artwork sourced locally is made with old wood and old door handles and latches. The center table is made with metal and cement. The wooden furniture is very English with highlights coming from geometric wallpaper. The master bedroom is olive, beige and grey. A customized wallpaper of a setting of European arches is adjacent to the bed. Other rooms are soft and pastels with colours in lilac family. The son’s room is younger with blues and greens. The outdoor patio has tiles of patchwork and hand painted furniture. The garden has a water body on the periphery and open lawn for entertainment. A combination of mature pastels and fine detailing, this home is a breath of fresh air.
