White Harbor Retreat

The key thing about this home was the location and the site; it is on a really prominent lot on Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota – the type of lot that you don’t come across for sale everyday, so we wanted to of course create a home design that takes advantage of those amazing views.

We wanted to create something classic and timeless in style and form – and shingle style. So the home features an abundance of glass on the back side looking out on the lake with all the key primary living spaces, also the outdoor living is on the back of the house with a pool that you access from the lower level and a screen porch that allows you to live outdoors for a good part of the year. Really great for indoor-outdoor living, great for entertaining. We designed in timeless details that are subtle yet provide a ton of character, including the windows being deeply recessed in the walls and the shingles rolling back to the windows. A strong stone base anchors the home to the land and gives it a feeling of permanence within the landscape. It both looks new and like it always kind of been a part of the landscape at the same time.

Inside the home we did an open floorpan concept. The spaces are well defined by Architectural details but still completely open. Here, people are never isolated from one another; even the scullery kitchen that’s tucked behind the main kitchen is still open to the spaces to both be able to converse between spaces and also share light. It’s conceived as volumes of space, and what you don’t see are a lot of walls defining spaces – an important Architectural element of the home. The details still provide delineation of spaces and timeless detail inside the home.

Light goes through the home from front to back to maximize the views of the lake. When you’re always connected to nature, you’re always getting a lot of daylight. You can open up doors to get cross breezes and cross ventilation throughout the home. The interiors combine classic and modern seamlessly in a way that feels current and will also stand the test of time.
