The Indian Austere

The clients desired a home that echoed tunes from their roots yet fused effortlessly into their new milieu. By combining two adjacent 3-bedroom apartments, totalling 2183 sqft, the space was designed to embody this vision. With South Indian roots and long settled in a culturally different city, they aspired to create a soulful dwelling that celebrated their blended identities - a traditional-contemporary home, perfect for gathering their extended family.

Functions were reallocated and peppered throughout the spacious apartment - a living space, kitchen dining, a worship area, four bedrooms, a family room, and a study library. The interior shell was intentionally envisioned as an understated envelope in ivory white to elevate the vibrance of the art, motifs, textiles, textures, and furniture that resonated with the family’s sensibilities. Among these were several pieces cherished for their sentimental value, carefully preserved and revitalised by the design team. Beyond a commitment to sustainable practices, this approach sought to safeguard the treasure trove of memories woven into the family’s collective narrative, infusing every corner with profundity.

A soulful sanctuary emerges out of the merging of two adjacent 3-bedroom apartments. This contemporary home highlights the richness of Indian crafts alongside celebrating the clients’ love for celestial motifs, albeit with a sombre approach.

Wooden arched strips drape over columns and beam bottoms, gently meandering across, creating discrete pockets within the space.

A TV console in oak and rattan finishes harmonises with the cane textures of the furniture, while the wooden arched strips continue to meander as dignified delineators through the space.

The white and teal palette bathes the living space in refreshing serenity. A suspended shelving unit for curios acts as a stylistic pre-cursor, beckoning one to enter the adjacent study room.

A custom-made rattan headboard with a glass casing joins the symphony of textures that sing through the daughter’s resting space.

A built-in window seating with shelving in an oak finish provides a cosy nook for reading or relaxation, as it lights up with the gentle glow of the morning sun. One can pass hours sitting here in peaceful contemplation, watching the world go by.

A breezy serenity engulfs the resting space in hues of whites and blues. As soft light filters in through the sheer curtains, it leaves the inhabitant feeling instantly rejuvenated.

A natural retreat, the master bedroom in tones of white and oak bathes in soft light and extends into the outdoors, welcoming the wilderness within.

The study cum library is designed for the quintessential bibliophile. Wrapped in wooden accents, anyone can lose themselves in the exhaustive collection of books.

Natural patterns and celestial motifs engulf the dining space in the form of floral prints and peacocks perched on foliage- all appearing as a scene straight out of the forest of enchantments.

Celestial Vahanas- the peacocks invite one into an intimate worship space, as ethereal light bathes a wooden altar with sacred figurines.

The kitchen cabinets are rendered in a sombre taupe, while the flooring stands out in patterned tiles that inject a vibrant aesthetic, delineating the kitchen space from adjacent areas.
