Project: Sth Melbourne Bachelor Pad ft. Austral Bricks
Behind and above a restaurant in a narrow street of Victorian terraces is the unlikely location for this brick, glass and steel “bachelor pad.”
The owner/builder/architect, Theo Kerlidis of K20 Architects, was presented with a dilemma common in heritage areas: how to design something new, while maintaining sensitivity. He was also required not to compromise the restaurant’s operations.
The key to the solution was scale and the use of Nubrik™ Classic230 Red pressed bricks. “We liked the honesty of the red brick,” Kerlidis explains. Internally, a large fireplace is the focus of the open plan living/dining/kitchen area while upstairs is a single bedroom and ensuite.
The building has high thermal mass thanks to the use of brickwork, blockwork (especially around the large fireplace) and concrete slabs.
No longer a bachelor, Kerlidis and his partner Cathy have rented out the property. However his vision will be on display for generations, if not centuries, to come.
