Prelude:
The interior of the house which is designed by the architects themselves is located in the arid climate of Vadodara. The house for a couple in their late forties and visiting children staying abroad had a very clear brief from the lady of the house; ‘It has to be low in maintenance and Easy to clean, Less niches to clean but maximum nature to enjoy’. The couple used to stay on the same plot in their old house and they were very keen to re-build their new house on the same place so that they can uphold their social ties as well as sense of belonging to the place.
Concept:
The design of house revolves around the central Open to sky space which acts as a connection between the Higher Ground Floor and the First Floor. The Dining space, staircase and overlooking windows and bridge of the bedrooms forms a part of this central space, all the other usable areas are revolving around this central space. The Light well and adjacent stairwell forms the heart of this space. It weaves the lateral and the vertical movement in the house and thus the house-lady can monitor the entire house from a single point.
Predominantly the house is a combination of Exposed Brick Work, Form Finished Exposed Concrete work and Black Kadappa stone flooring. These three materials along with the teak wood furniture forms the engaging ambience of the house which is further dotted by various artifacts and art-pieces collected by the client over a period of time.
Patterns
The design of the interior of the house is dominated by various patterns created in the three major materials, the geometric floral patterns of opening in the brick work and Kadappa stone flooring as well as the grid patterns of the exposed concrete. This pattern renders articulation to the plain surfaces and add element of curiosity. The pattern continues in the railing of the staircase which is a central element of the house and also in the garden which acts as an extension of the living room.
The patterns keep the visitor and the residents engaged in a continuous dialogue with the design and spaces and maintain a constant interest. This is a very important aspect of the design of the house which is going to be inhabited by just two persons for most of the time.
Space Perception & Light
The Black flooring is contested playfully by the natural light coming from the Central Open to sky as well as patterns in the brick and large opening towards the garden. The house changes its moods based on the lighting condition outside and this adds drama to the interiors. This drama of light is captured on the self textured brick and concrete walls as well the black Kadappa stone floors, the central – open to sky portion of the house is done in 100mm x100mm Kota stone with tumble effect, which adds a rustic feeling to the floor. The space planning is very capturing and all the transition spaces allows views to spaces across the floors, this generates a unique feeling of connection.
Furniture
The furniture in the place is kept to the minimal based on its usability, instead the space is articulated with a lot of artifacts collected over a period of time by the owner of the house. The furniture is a combination of contemporary straight lines in teak wood and re-used old furniture customized as per the requirement of the client and the space. The re-designed swing from an old door shutter, colored centre table with lion motifs, decorated tusk and metal pots renders an epoch look to the house. The yellow stained veneer doors, traditional recreated windows and fabricated staircase with wooden steps adds interest to the overlooking spaces.
