PRELUDE
The house designed by the architect themselves is located on a large plot admeasuring 2000 Sq.Mt. in Dumas, the outskirts of Surat. The plot already houses an old colonial style outhouse dated 1937. The project was the restoration of the outhouse as well as addition of a weekend retreat with state-of-the art facility for a party lover and lavish lifestyle of the client. The addition of twice the size of the existing outhouse along with the connection between the existing and the newly proposed built form presented a unique challenge and opportunity to have a blend of tradition and style.
CONCEPT
The conceptual idea for the weekend retreat for the couple in their 40’s was to continue the old world charm offered by the 1937 – outhouse already located in the plot with a huge verandah and sloping roof. The design starts with the semi covered connection between the old and the new unit which is used as an open dining space. The space is around an existing tree and is partially covered by a bridge connecting the two units at upper level and is also the main entrance foyer to the house.
The interior of the weekend house is designed with an idea of taking maximum advantage of the outdoor view of the lush green landscape. The large glass pane windows with wooden framing allows maximum vision to the outdoors, the entire house is clad with treated wood on the outside and contains a large sloping roof. The design is inspired by chic style and is a mix of furnishings in different finishes, colors and styles and from different eras. The elaborate floor rugs in vibrant color and detailed weaving pattern play a very important role in the design of the house.
MATERIAL AND FURNITURE
The main material palette for the house is white and patterned cement tiles which gives an earthen look as well as a retro feel to the entire house, but at the same time it is very user friendly in terms of maintenance. The entire space is dotted with handpicked furniture mainly in large floral print fabric as well as natural wood framings. The four postal bed, the diwan and the teak wood bar unit are some of the example of the eclectic feel that the house has; The eclectic style for the furniture renders a chic look to the house and the printed tapestry and wall hangs renders a vibrant and refreshing look to the house. The toilet floors are done in kota stone terrazzo as well as handmade cement tiles, the patterned look enhances the ethnic and fusion look of the house.
