Introduction:
In India every common man aspires to have his own ‘Home’………. Architecture and Design have finally started to percolated to the Bourgeois class of India and it is the duty of the designer to provide full justice to the aspirations of a common man. The design for a residence on a 190 Sq. Yd. tiny land parcel in the City of Surat takes this aspiration as the point of departure for the design of the house. The house with an elaborate requirement of Living Areas, Kitchen & Dining Space, Utilities, three bedrooms & a multipurpose hall made it compulsory to go VERTICAL, the high flood level in the area ruled out the requirement of any habitable space on the Ground Level.
Plan form : The Three Bay House
The compact three-bay house is divided in grids of width 4.0m. – 2.5 m. – 3.5 m. with a total width of the house being 10.0 m. only. The central bay is predominantly as a light well and for vertical circulation, while the other two bays are the designated usable areas. The vertical stacking of functions is done due to the limited floor plate; the Living, interactive & utility areas are on the Higher Ground Floor level while the Relaxing areas are on the First and Second Level.
Response to Climate:
The site for the project is abutted by roads on three sides and on the fourth side it shares a common wall with a residential building. The North facing building is standing in a manner which allows maximum light from the North Side and healthy cross ventilation from West to East. The common wall on the South, which is shared with the adjacent building naturally, shields the building from harsh solar radiation. The Skylight in the central bay illuminates the entire house and the play of light throughout the day gives the house a dramatic look.
The Form: ‘The tilted Brick Cube & The Talking Concrete’
The Gestural Architecture of the house – ‘The Building wants to say something’, is a bold expression comprising of a central tilted Brick Cube and flanking forms made of Exposed concrete. The tilted brick cube gives the required flamboyance to the building and the concrete delivers the much need pause to the form.
Material Palette – The material palette is a riot of the vibrancy of the Exposed Brick, Calmess of the Exposed Concrete, Mischievous Black Mosaic Flooring with pearl inlay, warmth of the Teak wood and serenity of Sand Stone elements.
