K Residence

Oscillating classic styles in resonance with the varied age group in the heart of Mumbai suburbs.

Perched in the suburbs of Mumbai, the K Residence is a careful synthesis of classic royal style with traces of traditional elements, inclined with the tastes of the residents.

The four-bedroom duplex residence was conceived to insinuate two unpredictable contrasts in the interiors of the two levels, about the varied age groups occupying the penthouse. The lower level of the residence was designed for the two septuagenarian ladies of the house while the upper level was for a couple and their son. The dynamic contrast between the two levels can be observed through the distinct functions and design styles on both levels, as required by the two groups of users.

The lower floor gradually unfolds with a formal living room and dining area, a mandir, then leading towards the two bedrooms. The formal living area embraces the Indian style with the use of vivid red and blue shades and traditional decor elements, thus giving it a classic Indian appearance. From the living area, the space meanders to the upper level, opening to larger social spaces — a home office, a family room, and a bar — beyond which, lie the two bedrooms. The spaces in the lower level were curated to be more outward, enabling the area to reveal itself to the lush green surroundings. The common rooms on the upper floor of the residence follow a contemporary style, fashioned to increase the social exchange between the family members. A stepped ceiling with a carved skylight sits atop the cutout overlooking the lower floor, allowing for light to naturally flow into the space, thus making a design statement. The built-in TV unit is concealed and extends out of the wall when required which allows for maximizing the available space and therefore, optimizing the spatial function. The family room seamlessly flows into the bar and the two spaces merge in absence of a physical threshold. Inspired by the flair of Art Deco, the bar and the family room were tailored with a deconstructed vision and a palette of bottle green, gold, and walnut wood, which tie the two spaces together.

A classically inclined home office rests beyond the family room that is thoroughly draped with wood molding and wall cladding, lending a royal, rustic appearance to the space. The dark wood is complemented by a mustard yellow upholstered table apron and Kilim-inspired hand-tufted carpet which treads lightly on the eyes, bringing visual comfort to the residents. Employing a dark palette laced with subtle warm colours and the presence of a dummy fireplace renders a gothic look in the room and captures the essence of a British study.

Designed concerning the preferences of the residents, the bedrooms express through distinct styles the age group being catered to. The bedrooms in the lower level were fabricated with vernacular elements, exhibiting the influence of the Indian style in a modern design and resonating with the residents occupying them. The upper floor accommodates a couple and their son, with the interiors expressing their travels with flavourful palettes and larger spaces for socializing, showcasing luxury.

The son’s bedroom takes on a contemporary yet classic approach with the application of a dark colour palette. The private space first opens up into a study area, later revealing the bedroom. The overall colour palette for the bedroom consisted of bold shades of blue and grey, with blunt blue, midnight blue, and graphite grey as the primary hues. Hints of gold can be observed throughout the room which demonstrates luxury and sophistication. Graphite-coloured veneer and marble tiles embedded on the bed-back add to the desired scheme of the room, indicating the individuality of the son. The interiors of the master bedroom were consciously crafted to ooze out a crude royal ambiance. The concrete-finished walls infused with copper foil and royal colours greatly emphasize the classic royal aspect of the room. Leather upholstery was employed on the bed and the wardrobe with slight gold accents, giving a stark, polished balance to the bedroom.

The K Residence is a striking example of functional and aesthetic division of spaces based on varied age groups, with the styles of design oscillating from British classical aesthetics to traditional ones. The residence captures the inclinations of each resident and delivers their essence in the form of decor and functions.
