The Serai
"The concept seeks to create a balanced interplay of historic revelations and contemporary additions: both drawing inspiration from and interpreting the underlying Indo-Saracenic influences of Jaipur’s architectural history."
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The project involved a renovation and reinterpretation of a 19th-century haveli -nestled in the heart of the walled city of Jaipur, 'The Serai' is designed to create a boutique experience drawing inspirations from the beauty, culture, crafts, & historic setting of Jaipur.
The belief is to abstract memories of the site, to build paradigms that heighten the relationship between the old and the new, to recreate the place whilst having a sense of nostalgia, thus ultimately being authentic to the site.
The existing building will be given a new expression by stripping off paint and cement plaster layers. The exposed rubble masonry will then be repaired with traditional lime mortar with details in lime plaster.
Materials include hand-cut stone, poured in lime mortar with details in lime plaster on the ceilings & the walls. Locally crafted furniture and cabinets have been created in Sheesham. These simple materials are proposed to be worked on by craftsmen to evolve into something extraordinary. The transformation will be what imbibes a sense of luxury to the hotel.
