Salem House
The Sripathi Residence in Salem, Tamil Nadu, completed in 2015, is a 6 bedroom, two-story residence that was designed for owners Rupa and Sripathi Kumar, and their three sons. The key of the design was to create a Contemporary Indian residence, with seamless transitions between large open living areas and private family spaces.
The entrance opens out into the central spine which consists of a formal living room and a double-height family room. Both spaces are divided using the main staircase which, with sleek brass details and a warm wooden finish, forms a central installation between the two rooms. The double height family room ends in a full-height glazing which visually extends the spaces and creates a spill-out into the garden beyond. A large contemporary glass chandelier creates a dramatic statement in this space, elevating the entire volume as a whole. The furniture in the entire house is an eclectic mix of modern Italian designs and traditional South Indian pieces. The ground floor has two bedrooms, while four bedrooms, a music room and a Home theatre take up the floor plate of the first floor. Each bedroom has been customized to meet the individual requirements, from sophisticated wooden details in the master bedroom to young bright colours in the sons’ bedrooms. A spill-out terrace from the Home Theatre adds a private terrace garden on the first floor that doubles up as a space to entertain guests.
The music room showcases the family’s love for music, with framed spaces to house the Veena and other instruments. Fully landscaped gardens around the residence add the secondary layer of detail to the project and visually frame the entire property. Constant inputs from the clients and their presence at site helped shape the design, making it a more personal space for the entire family.
This collaborative effort between all people involved in the project made this a very fulfilling design endeavor.
