Private Residence for a Bollywood Actor
Houses in Mumbai are a challenge for any designer keeping in mind the constraints in available space and numerous requirements of any family. It becomes all the more complicated when there are two houses that have to be combined to form one. What results are rather small rooms built in such a way that they cant be combined to make bigger spaces.
This house is a combination of two 2 bhk’s and hence technically a four BHK. The living room formed a t shape and it was difficult to divide the space
The house belongs to a couple who love to entertain. Which meant having more than one entertainment areas. Despite having columns all throughout, we managed to have a large open area which can be used for entertainment.
A common part of the corridor to both houses was enclosed to form a foyer. Since it is rather narrow, the space was utilized in a way that that it can be used to seat visitors who they did not want to entertain in the living room. A niche on both the sides forms an entire shoe closet. The décor included hand printing blocks which were placed on the walls to add an interesting Indian touch to the house.
The T shaped living room is designed in such a way that the bar area is towards one side and the dining area towards the other. The living area of both the houses combined gives a vast space which is played with interesting pieces of furniture. Next to the dining area is also the den, which has a 7’ sliding partition which slides into a pocket in a way that the space looks as a part of the living room.
The den is the most used space of the house. It houses a 108” tv where the occupants entertain their guests the most. A bathroom attached to this room was broken and converted into a library and study corner. An entire wall from floor to ceiling houses the library shelf, which is lined with books and curios. The den also has fibre optic ceiling which turns the room into a movie theatre once the lights are out.
The master suite was expanded by opening up the kitchen on the right side apartment and turning it into a closet. To ensure the space looks big, the space behind the bed and between the closet had a screen, instead of a wall. This ensures privacy and yet offers depth. Along one length, the ceiling dipped much lower than the rest of the bedroom. Since this was directly facing the bed. The entire space was treated like a feature wall and houses a tv along with a full closet.
Further expanding the master bedroom is the open bathroom. There is a glass wall between the bedroom and the bathroom. The wc sits in one corner behind a wall and the shower area and tub was shifted into another. The only thing that remains visible is the basin area! The bathroom space was again carved out of sacrificing a part of another bathroom. However, since there were only the couple living in the house, they did not want more than three bathrooms.
The other two bedrooms are used as regular bedrooms. The décor tone is neutral in both with subtle pinks and blues dominating the room.
The décor of the house is extremely varied. Not one style was followed throughout. Each room tells a different story. From Classical to modern, the entire house has elements which are different and yet bound together in a beautiful combination.
Most of the furniture was custom made except the colorful couch in the living room, which adds a funk to the otherwise neutral tone. Accessories were picked up from stores across Delhi and Mumbai
