A Place in the Sun
A Place in the Sun
If the universal emotions of peace and serenity could be edified, they would morph into this wondrous home.
The Entrance
The main door opens into an entrance and the sun beams in columns, as if in greeting to a new guest. Natural sunlight and the many joys it brings, is central to the theme of this project. It’s almost as though the Sun is another member of this family of a young couple, their parents and twin children.
A tall shoe rack with a cerulean bench beside indicates a sense of functionality, beauty and calm that permeates the entire home. We’ve used the cerulean-teal shades as a recurring element through the house to evoke the calm of the sea. A window frame here or a curio there is all it takes to pop yet pacify.
We also commissioned an artist to paint animals and birds in every window. An occasional artwork does wonders to elevate a living space, doesn’t it?
The Living Room
The living room was meant to be open and empty in the center. A brown leather sofa was placed on the right with a set of two nesting tables custom made in Indian marble and metal.
The simple white TV unit was made with storage cane baskets below to store the kids’ toys. The client wanted a tall fiddle leaf plant in the house and the TV unit was our best suggestion.
This space moves into the dining area on the right. A table for six made of solid wood with a tile patterned top and an essential drawer for cutlery dominates this region. 6 asymmetrical distressed white dining chairs complement it. Accompanying them is a white distressed crockery unit with a wood top, completing the whole look of the dining and adding much needed storage.
Across this arrangement is a bar unit with ample room for bottles and glassware. A mirror atop reflects the corridor to the inner chambers and creates an illusion of space.
A pleasant addition to this Mumbai home (a city infamous for its paucity of space) is the deck area overlooking the greens outside. We changed the flooring and gave it a warm feel and created white brick effects on both sides of the walls.
The Parents’ Bedroom
This elderly couple loves their tomes so we decided that upon entrance to their room, the first thing you see is the high open shelving of books, adjacent to the wardrobe.
This gives way to a geometric wooden wall arrangement, with curios kept on the shelf and dark frames on the wall highlighting each one.
Across is the bed with a light element connecting with the headboard.
The ceiling we gave wooden slats to infuse a homey, warm feel.
This entire area of the house is connected to the other bedrooms by a long hallway. That wall is full of pop posters of films and actors, artfully strewn across it with bold lettering “Picture Abhi Baaki Hai” above working as a header. A nod to this family’s love of cinema. This is the clients’ favourite bit of their home.
The Kids’ Bedroom
On the left from the hallway is the kids’ bedroom- you enter the bedroom from the centre and are welcomed by a fairly large bunk bed in wood, accented with green and white. Lots of drawers under the steps of the bed ensure storage. And a huge storage space under the bottom bunk. Since the room is small - there are two individual slender wardrobes on either side of the bedroom. On the right you see an art wall beautifully created by a young artist- a happy picture of frolicking animals amid nature. Full length windows allow natural sunlight in and make the room appear larger.
The kids’ bedroom and the master bedroom are connected by a door on the inside, which is camouflaged and woven into the wall art.
The Master Bedroom
As you enter the master bedroom, you see an elegant, stand-alone arched dresser unit. Ahead is a long wall covered with the white sliding wardrobe and a bed with many elements around it on the wall, the most striking being a world map wall art, highlighting their love for travel. Adjacent to the wardrobe is an interesting desk in white and wood frame around with shelves, creating a nifty work space.
A natural wooden herringbone pattern graces the ceiling. Greens and yellows interspersed with the signature white and light wood of the house make the space inviting and tranquil.
Our clients were keen to create a bright home in this 1077 Sq.ft apartment at Godrej Trees, Vikhroli, Mumbai, India. They loved the colour white and were quite clear on the look of their dream home which enabled us build on those ideas. We decided on a neutral but classy palette of white walls and lighter wood and distressed furniture. Each room had a pastel shade to be used along with the decided palette.
We have sourced and custom made most of the furniture items and lights for our project. Rest were made in-house.
This home turned out to be exactly as this family wished and we had envisaged- a calm oasis of light, indoor greens and an escape from the mundane.
