The homeowners of this mid-century split-level ranch and family of four, desired a more open floor plan throughout their first floor, which consisted of living room, dining room and kitchen. A key element was the remodeling of their dated kitchen which was flip flopped with the existing dining room location and opened up into one large visual space. The two spaces are now separated only by a peninsula. The new formal dining room location opens onto a patio via French doors further enhancing the open feel of the space.
The design provided some challenges stemming from the tight U-shaped layout and its three corners. This was handled by placing all of the appliances far enough from each other so that two people could be in the kitchen at once using different appliances. The microwave was placed at the end of the peninsula, away from the sink so that other family members would have access while the kitchen was being used by the primary cook. A beverage center was located on the backside of the peninsula and away from the work zone. Seating for two at the backside of the peninsula keeps helpers out of the kitchen proper.
Dark cherry cabinets ground the space, while white uppers, talls and countertops keep the space feeling light and airy. A geometric relief tile in a light gray green creates a unique modern feel to the space without being overly busy, and reeded glass doors, symmetrically placed appliances garages and open cabinetry give rhythm to the room. The end result is a midcentury ranch for modern living.
