Venice Beach is littered with shoddy, boxy apartments built to house the motley assortment of bodybuilders, surfers, waiters, screen writers, and others who were drawn to Venice in the 1960's, 70's, and 80's. The Beach Boxes boxes subvert the stereotype by taking ordinary experience to a higher level. Located on a main boulevard four blocks from the Venice boardwalk, six sustainable homes surround a sequence of internal courtyards. The site plan encourages community and preserves privacy. Each home is an imploded box filled with light, energized by solar radiant heat and photovoltaic power. The architecture integrates artwork by Nancy Monk.
