Sasawane House
This tricky project entailed retaining plinth walls, existing openings, introducing a new roof – capable of handling the western coast monsoons, improving the spatial quality of all the existing spaces and simultaneously integrate our house with an existing Master Suite.
To draw in morning sun by introducing a clerestory and releasing the thermal stack, the soaring new volume was capped by a special triangular truss structure.
Naturally ventilated open to sky toilets were introduced, old columns from single tree logs, salvaged by the client were used to front the principal verandah to enjoy the tropical climes in the breezy shade.
The security screen transforms into a flickering screen of tea-lites by accommodating small local tea cups within its structure – so the lady of the house can receive her guests in the early evening – with the delicate scent of oil lamps – recalling the exterior walls of the ancient Keralean temples of the past.
