A young family of three voracious readers asked for a house with ample storage for their books and nooks to curl up and read them in. 60’x40′ site, basic Vaastu compliance.

STORY

From the beginning we were keen to build sparingly and put in a lot of time to understand the client’s lifestyle and spatial requirements. As a result, 25% of the plot area is un-built, lending itself to a large backyard garden; and another 25% makes for an indoor garden, which connects to the backyard via a little verandah.

Light is the most important design element in this house. It creates shadows and mystery in places of transition and rest. It plays with patterns in areas of activity. It floods generously into the pockets of green.

The family preferred to have their books spread around the house as opposed to having a dedicated study area, so this led to a lot of shelves and reading nooks. Their daughter loves to climb, so the house has been designed with careful regard to her safety.
