CREATING MORE SPACE FROM A BASEMENT AND BACKYARD PATIO REMODEL IN ANNANDALE, VA

Highlights include:

-Two fireplaces: indoor and outdoor
-Wall-mounted interior and exterior TVs
-Indoor and outdoor bar areas for entertaining
-Built-in cabinet and wine rack
-Modern remote workstation

With a bit of creativity and vision, this rarely-used walk-out basement and patio in Annandale, VA was transformed into indoor and outdoor entertaining and workspaces.

UNCOVER THE POTENTIAL: BASEMENT ENTERTAINMENT ROOM WITH BUILT-IN DRY BAR

Indoors, the existing basement area was dull and lifeless, and the clients did not enjoy spending time there. They had set up a workspace to work from home, and a bar and TV area for relaxing, but there was nothing special about it. The remodel created a stunning focal point fireplace with a tile surround and a wall-mounted big screen TV above it. To balance the exterior-access sliding glass doors on the left of the fireplace, a built-in cabinet with an open wine rack was installed to the right of it. Beautiful laminate flooring adds character and warmth to the space.

A wall at the other end of the basement was lined with a built-in dry bar area featuring a countertop coffee station, a refrigerator and wine cooler, and upper and lower cabinets. A modern workstation was also incorporated into this end of the room.

STYLISH BACKYARD PATIO TRANSFORMATION

Outdoors, the exterior of the walk-out basement had existing brick wall that Schroeder Design/Build envisioned as a focal point. Because the existing stone patio was covered under an existing structure that protects the area from the elements, we were able to incorporate a wall-mounted modern gas fireplace with a large format porcelain tile surround, a bar area and a wall-mounted flat screen TV above the fireplace. With the addition of patio chairs and tables these homeowners now enjoy an entertainment and relaxation haven.

SURPRISING, UNFORESEEN USES OF THE NEWLY REMODELED SPACE

During the COVID-19 pandemic, both husband and wife sheltered in place and worked remotely from home. As a result of the remodel, the wife was able to host a three-day-long, COVID-safe company event in the new backyard patio space. The associates felt comfortable working outdoors around a table, warmed by the outdoor fireplace. It was an awesome experience for the client and her work team. The husband then held a one-day retreat for his work associates.

As a result of the remodel, the clients enjoy spending time both indoors and outdoors, and have put the new areas to use in a variety of ways.
