The problem is that the newer tables are not wood on top it's either a veneer or MDF. Such a shame they charge more for the table and it isn't even wood anymore!

To answer your question I would give it a light sanding and several coats of poly, based on how easily the finish wears out. Wax will leave water marks.

I'll add to this post- I've had all the same problems and am getting a replacement next week, I think we're going to cover it in polyacrylic, I just don't think wax will be enought to protect this expensive/crappy table. So frustrated.
