About Us

Robert Nebolon Architects (RNA), is a nationally-known architectural firm awith offices in San Francisco Bay Area and in Los Angeles, California. Our firm has been in existence since 1994 (and is still full of great ideas!!) What a client can expect from my staff and I is expertise in securing design approvals from the Design Review and City Planning Departments as well as a beautiful unique home design suited well to the site. We also work with other agencies such as the Fire Departments and state agencies in rural areas and sites with fire concerns, creeks, forested areas, and biological protected zones. My projects are usually on challenging sites such as built-over-water, floating on water, adjacent to water, extreme steepness, extremely narrow, rural/secluded and far from utilities, and high fire hazard areas. My clients can expect a high level of finishes and design quality in my designs. Our work can be best described as California Modern, California Coastal, California Contemporary San Francisco Modern, Bay Area Modern, and warm modern. We also cater to those clients interested in Vaastu Shastra residential principles/planning, Critical Regionalism, and new ADUs (accessory dwelling units), SB-9 & SB-10 housing. Our work has been featured in numerous print and on-line magazines including Architectural Digest, Dwell Magazine, Sunset Magazine, Curbed, and the New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times. Robert Nebolon and his work has been featured on HGTV (video and online articles), as well as numerous national and international architectural hardcover books and magazines. Robert Nebolon was also very fortunate to be the winner of 2015-2016 HGTV " Design of the Year", a national design award for design excellence. He just drew plans for us for our 2nd remodel & exceeded all expectations. He is very upfront about costs & timelines. Robert went above and beyond when we built our Eichler inspired ranch. Not only was the plan amazing, but he flipped it to fit the lot, drew in a basement, and made several other changes to make the home fit OUR needs. He worked closely with our builder to make sure the construction was done correctly, and to his high standards. The home is AMAZING!

I originally asked Robert Nebolon to modify our kitchen area to have more sunlight and make it warmer in the winter season. Before doing any design, Robert spent time learning what we value most, how we spent time in the house, what we expect in the coming years. He then came up a plan that elegantly materialize our vision and turns my childhood dream into reality. The new design transforms a dull 1960's house and harmoniously wove into the reflective surroundings, boldly surpassing its domain. It was not an easy job, but Robert succeeded it, beautifully and triumphantly. A case in the point: at city design review meeting, the committee members were so impressed by the beauty of the design and commented: although the design is not consistent with our existing building code, but we should change our code (so our city will not miss good designs)!

Having worked with Robert and his firm on a number of projects over the past 15 years I would recommend Robert Nebolon Architects for just about any home building project. Robert and his team are creative problem solvers who have the ability and experience to work in different architectural styles providing cost effective solutions to each project whether new construction or remodels. They are good team players and work well with contractors, subs and suppliers to find the best solutions to meet the clients needs. They are responsive and prompt with follow up and good listeners.

Robert Nebolon is an exceptionally talented architect with strong expertise in eco-friendly, resource-efficient design. I wrote about his work when I was the senior home editor at Sunset magazine, and more recently, as editor in chief of Houseplans.com when I asked him to create the design for an updated Eichler house plan, which he did brilliantly. His designs are imaginative, elegant, and pragmatic -- he carefully responds to client needs while producing artful solutions. I recommend Robert Nebolon with the greatest enthusiasm.

We asked Robert Nebolon to design an addition (primarily a kitchen with dining area, as well as a new full bath, a small family room, and a basement extension under the new kitchen) to our 1920's Berkeley bungalow. We wanted an addition which would be architecturally integral to the rest of the house. He succeeded marvelously; not only is the kitchen nicely integrated into the entire home, but it became - and remains - the beautiful, whimsical, utilitarian, and colorful space in which we and our guests prefer to spend our time. He was ceaselessly inventive and gracious during the design process, meeting our exacting criteria and frequent requests for changes. He was also skillful in nudging us to a conclusion of that design process at the appropriate time. Robert also effectively assisted us in choosing and working with the contractor and remained helpful and engaged throughout the entire construction project. The kitchen was pictured in the February 1997 issue of "Sunset" Magazine (see full page photo on page 109). This image of our very colorful kitchen also appeared on the cover of the Sunset Books' "Kitchens: Planning and Remodeling" (eighth edition) published in 2000.

Commented: what kind of wood is used for the trellis and what color stain? thanksThe wood siding is red cedar rabbeted siding with a 4 inch exposure. The beams are resawn red cedar. The stain is Cabot's Stain. The color is Bark. i hope this helps. RN
