About Us

SoYoung has over 20 years of high-end interior design and architecture experience and is an associate member of the American Institute of Architects. After a 15 year career as a professional chef and business owner, she decided to pursue her love of art, architecture and design. She served as Interior Design Director at Van der Ryn Architects and The Ecological Design Institute in Sausalito, renowned for sustainable design, and established her own design firm in 1997. For 7 years SoYoung worked extensively for George Lucas on his estate in Marin County designing and managing the renovations of 7 of his properties. For 5 years she was the top selling designer for Ethan Allen in Corte Madera, CA. She now adds Window Treatment Specialist for Wesco Screen and Shades to her list of design services. SoYoung's artistic talents, interior architectural training, and construction and resource knowledge have allowed her to offer full service interior design, from CAD construction documents to fine art acquisition. She believes that excellent design can be achieved in any genre and takes pride in her ability to work within a broad spectrum to create harmonious environments that reflect the lifestyles and sensibilities of her clients. So Young is in the process of helping us re-design an outdated one story cabana into a two story guest cottage in the Bay area which will be built in 2015. Additionally, she has skillfully reconfigured the master bedroom/bath in the main house into what will be a beautiful master suite/ walk-in closet and bath. She has provided valuable advice on resources and furnishings, knowing that we like to be very involved in the shopping and decision making process, which is not always typical in the designer/client relationship. Many designers like to "take charge" but SoYoung listens, understands our style and is extremely easy to work with, and is a joy to have around. She is conscientious, hard working and is extremely thorough. We have also appreciated her humor throughout what has been a challenging process in getting this project under way. We recommend her without reservation. She will not disappoint!

SoYoung made our master bath truly unique and gorgeous by choosing the perfect antique tansu cabinet as the vanity and a stunning cast bronze bowl as the sink. She placed the sink on a striking, fossilized black granite counter fed by a contemporary wall mounted faucet which has such a cool look. I love the mix of old and new, and the soul it brings to the bathroom. SoYoung was invaluable in helping us with the plan and details of integrating our new bath and closet suite between the master and guest bedrooms. She is so nice, so easy to work with, and so very talented. We look forward to working with SoYoung again soon on our kitchen remodel. She is the best!

SoYoung provided outstanding design services in connection with a major remodel of our home. She listened, understood our style and what we wanted to accomplish, and provided thoughtful and creative ideas on how to execute our vision (rather than substituting her own). Our project was basically a tear-down and rebuild. She provided practical advice and sound ideas in guiding us through what initially seemed like an overwhelming design project. She is flexible in her approach, scaled the scope of work to our needs, and suggested efficient ways to do the legwork and make design decisions. We wanted to be very active in all aspects of the design process, not simply cede it to a design professional, and she approached the process as a collaborative partner with the right level of input and time and at a reasonable cost. We remain extremely happy with the results and recommend SoYoung's services without reservation.

Working with SoYoung was great. She helped me in designing my retail store, as well as choosing paint colors for my home. She was very easy to work with, offered clear creative decisions with attention to detail. She was professional and a kind person to work with. So Young designed all the interior architecture for our home. She played an intricate role in every detail of the interior of our house - from the molding throughout our home, and the well thought out kitchen layout to advice on our furnishings. The personal attention she gave our project was as if it was her own home. At the time we built our home "green design" was just emerging. So Young was recommended to us for her vast knowledge in the area of sustainable materials. Her expertise in the area of eco-friendly design combined with her sophisticated and eclectic sense of interior design and personable demeanor are what sets her apart. We feel fortunate to have been able to work with So Young, and feel the love and care she put into our project are reflected in our home.

It was a joy to work with SoYoung. She is very professional and respectful. She successfully transformed my pink bathroom suite into a beautiful Mediterranean spa. She was able to listen to my vision for the area and run with it to create what I envisioned and more. She also helped with window treatments throughout my house and worked well with my contractor. SoYoung helped us immensely with a long overdue remodel on our home by suggesting very smart ways to improve our kitchen, baths and lighting, and she brilliantly reconfigured our living room/dining room windows to fully take advantage of our mountain and bay views. She has an elegant, contemporary esthetic, that was a great fit for us and our house. SoYoung brought focus and energy to the project, and she was a joy to work with. SoYoung served as the interior designer on multiple new construction and remodeling projects our company executed at a large estate over a six year period from 2007 through 2013. The work included six guesthouses, a large multi-room pavilion, a pool house, and the main residence. She was responsible for designing kitchens, bathrooms, lighting plans, cabinetry, wall and ceiling paneling, doors, and fireplace surrounds. She selected the tile, stone slabs, plumbing and light fixtures, finish hardware, paint colors, wall coverings, and furnishings. I was the jobsite supervisor and worked closely with SoYoung on all of the projects. I found her to be professional, flexible, and responsive the whole way through. She is a very talented designer and was able to come up with creative solutions to many complex design challenges we faced. She had an excellent relationship with the client as well as with the entire design team, bringing warmth, humor, and an ease to all of her interactions. I consider her to be one of the key factors contributing to the success of our projects. I am happy to give a wholehearted endorsement of SoYoung as one of the most professional and talented designers I have worked with over the course of my career.

So Young has masterminded both a home and business project for us. She has come up with ingenious solutions to working within confined spaces, like a built-in dining room "booth" that meets a window, sits between two fixed posts and gets the benefit of an overhead skylight. She has designed several beautiful, functional, custom tansu cabinets, one of which is uniquely engineered to house a CD collection of several thousand; behind attractive closed doors, layers of shelving are nested and may be revealed for use, then simply tucked away again. She has brought spaciousness and a calming aesthetic to our home and office I could only have dreamed about.

SoYoung was a complete pleasure to work with. I have pretty strong tastes. And I also have a low threshold for "shopping" and "choosing". SoYoung helped focus me in the right direction to get what I needed for our kitchen without overwhelming me, or wasting my time in places that wouldn't work. I think we chose the tile, the flooring and the counter top material in one day, just by staying focused on what would be appropriate for our home and budget. And it wasn't a rush job. We just nailed it, quickly! We couldn't be happier. Her layout for our kitchen maximized cabinets in a smart way, and we didn't waste a square inch of space! And believe me, our kitchen needed HELP! I would recommend working with SoYoung to anyone! She has great instincts, great taste, and she's a pleasure to work with!

When we bought our new home a few years ago, SoYoung Mack worked with me and my husband to make it our own. The experience was fun and stress-free and the outcome was fantastic! She was very perceptive in honing in on our style and tastes, finding solutions that delighted both of us. SoYoung made the process of choosing and purchasing everything from light fixtures and rugs to window coverings and furniture fun, easy and, in the end, extremely gratifying. While my husband and I have similar tastes, we don't always agree on the implementation, and SoYoung was wonderful at finding solutions that we both loved. I would give SoYoung my highest recommendation and would definitely call her when I need design services again.
