Holly Hollingsworth Phillips is a residential interior designer and co-owner of The English Room, which is based out of Charlotte, North Carolina. Holly’s style is elegant, eclectic and colorful. She has completed homes all over the east coast that have ranged from the super modern to very traditional while keeping it true to her style. She loves overseeing the design process from beginning to end. The best part is when your clients really trust you and set you free to do what you do best. Her love of color, pattern and layering of old and new can be seen in all her work. According to Holly, “Color makes people happy!” She loves the mixing the tradition of the past with the modern style of the future. Holly has worked in the design world from and early age. Her mother took her to antique shows all over the east coast and she went on her first buying trip to Europe at age 12. The home Holly grew up in was designed by Mario Buatta. She has fond memories of introducing Mario “the Prince of Chintz” to Chick-fil-a nuggets while discussing “decorating” as a third grader. Her mother, Nancy Hollingsworth, is a well known interior designer, and specializes in the English Country style. Childhood play dates could turn into magical discussions with mothers while they moved around furniture. Her lifelong passion for the arts has never waned. Holly has a strong educational love for antiques and the history of the decorative arts led her to this business. Holly’s early design experience includes working with Alexandra Stoddard and Sotheby’s – both in New York City. Holly completed a Mint Museum Senior Study and worked at the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center. After College, Holly lived in London while completing Sotheby’s 17th and 18th century decorative arts program. She has also completed The Winter institute at Winterthur, which provided a deep exposure one of the most complete collections of American Antiques in existence. Her first “professional” job was with Travis & Company in Atlanta where she ran the Antiques side of the showroom. In 1999, Holly joined her mother full time at the English Room in Charlotte. Her educational background includes a degree in Art History from Rollins College and a degree in Interior Design from the American College.

We believe your home should tell your story; it should be both beautiful and uniquely you. We strive to give each space a "soul"- where every element is necessary to the room as a whole. Everything from the lighting to the rug should be interesting, nothing an afterthought. We also believe in editing anything you don't love or is meaningful to you. When your home is designed in this way, it feels warm, welcoming and most of all, peaceful. Home in it's truest sense.

Mary Tobias Miller has been an interior designer since 1983. She moved to New York City after earning a BA degree in Art History and Design from Hollins College. She then attended the New York School of Design Entree program, but then later went on to get her AAS degree from Parsons School of Design and The New School. Initially, Mary worked for Suzie Frankfurt interiors in New York. They designed a wide range of homes for prominent New Yorkers as well as many celebrities. Mrs. Frankfurt was friends with Andy Warhol and, in fact, did a book with him. In addition to managing Suzie Frankfurt’s office, Mary’s duties included purchasing fine antiques from Sotheby’s and Christies at auction for the firm’s clients. She was later hired by Sotheby’s to work the evening and weekend Art and Antique Auctions. She did this in addition to working her interior design jobs during the week. After completing her degree at Parsons, Mrs. Miller added Commercial Interior Design to her resume by taking a job with Tom Lee Ltd, run by Sarah Lee. This firm specified interiors for many of the fine Hotels in New York and around the Country. Before starting her own firm in 1986, Mrs. Miller took a design position with Dean Patterson Bauer of New York. Mrs. Bauer’s expertise lay in the extremely detailed work of full scale renovations on the Upper East Side and Upper West Side of New York. It was here that Mrs. Miller learned first-hand the intricacies of the plumbing; electrical and cabinetry construction necessary to meet the stringent codes of New York City. The firm also had to meet the needs and high standards of their very discerning clientele. In 1986, Mary Tobias Interiors (later Mary Tobias Miller Interior Design)was established. At this point, Mrs. Miller was able to employ all the skills she had gleaned from her education and on the job experience. She later went on to work as an importer of French and English Antiques with a Paris based business partner. More recently, she opened a b o d e in Charlotte North Carolina. Abode houses a retail showroom of transitional and vintage home furnishings and accessories. In addition, Mary Tobias Miller’s full-service Interior Design Studio operates out of the showroom. Feel free to reach out to us, we would love to hear from you!
