Paul M. Donoho, Architect
Architects & Building Designers in Kailua Kona.
Average rating: 5 out of 5 stars3 January 2013
“We can't say enough good things about Paul Donoho. He is the ultimate professional. He was a pleasure to work with, his design work is exceptional as is his attention to detail. He had just the right balance between listening to us, the homeowners, while providing his experienced opinion. He had a great relationship with the contractor, creating a positive working relationship with him while still representing our interest. Even though we had built a home before, Paul provided a level of skill and experience that we could never come close to and we felt completely comfortable relying on his expertise. Having Paul on board throughout the process until the end of construction was extremely valuable.”

“We had a great experience with Phillip White, Laura Ayers and staff when building our new home in Manoa. They are professional, friendly, responsive to our needs as well as giving us superb ideas for the creation of our new home. They worked as a positive team, that really got along on all levels. Their working environment made us feel comfortable and welcome. We highly recommend them for any new clients/projects.”
Hawaii Island Architects, LLC

Average rating: 5 out of 5 stars22 July 2014
“We purchased a property on the Big Island of Hawaii and wanted an architect local to that area to design our home and assist in its construction as we were not as familiar with the issues that can arise in building in that area since we live in Washington State. We have received excellent service from the firm even before we had the company on contract. We are still in the later design phases, but already have greatly benefited in the design of our home to accommodate the specific climate and other environmental issues associated with building in Hawaii. The firm has the right contacts for all the other necessary engineering and construction services that will be needed in the design, permitting and construction of our home. We find Roger Brasel (principal of the firm) to be very easy to work with. So, this review is relative to the design of our home and does not cover the construction phase.”

“Stephen is a very creative architect who designed a beautiful vacation home for us in Hawaii. We worked closely with Stephen for almost three years from initial concept to completion of construction. He solved some difficult design issues with solutions that fit our budget. Since we were Stephen's first major residential project on his own we encountered a few design issues which may have been avoided with more experience or third party review. We would use Stephen again in the future and have provided recommendations to several prospective customers. We would encourage anyone working with Stephen to also hire an interior designer to help address design details.”

“Hai On is the best. He is a multi-award winning architect, but that is not why we chose him. Where he has chosen to do his work - from the Alasks tundra, to the beaches of Hawaii- convinced us he is an innovator at heart and has a deep sense of place and how it fits in design. Hai has a feel for the importance of the flow of air in every room - inside and ou t- of a hawaiian house, and is willing to experiment with innovative means to maximize it. He encourage us to install super vented 12" high sky lights and high screens throughout the house to capture the breezes and avoid the need for ac. THey are a big success, and the envy of neighbors, He is a great listener and a great questioner, who gently probes until he is sure that he understands not only objective goals for a project, but the value base that informs them -and of course the budget to realize them. In our case simplicity, absolute accessibility for wheelchair users, maximizing use of local woods and materials, and a more contemporary look for our 30 year old suburban type home (while still fitting into the rest of the neighborhood) were important to us. Our budget was tight. The whole project was greatly complicated when we discovered extensive damage that had not been revealed by inspection at purchase time. This caused the scope of the project to grow by a factor of ten. Instead of some ADA adjustments and a new floor, we ended up having to go down to the studs and do three complete baths and kitchen, as well as exterior siding, putting headers in that were missing over doors and windows, deconstructing a false ceiling, adding ramps and widening halls, Our cash flow couldn't keep up. Thus we had to use Hai only as a consultant and draw up the plans ourselves. (we wouldn't want to do that again). We had in mind an experimental design for shade screen on the 1800 sf lanai, that would avoid the use of posts. It would hang out from the house like a series of loosely connected flag poles. Hai pointed out the risks we would be taking in a strong wind with our light aluminum members and helped us come up with a solution, which didn't require adding wheelchair barrier to stablize things. We will have some pictures in the next two weeks.Meanwhile, we highly recommend Hai On for anyone who wants an environmentally sensitive, wheelchair accessible house, that doesn't look like it was built for either, they just seem organic to the space.”
