Uma Stewart Interiors and Lifestyle is a design studio based in the greater New York region. Studio services include design-build, art buying, and interior design. Led by designer Uma Stewart, the studio’s look is streamlined eclecticism, and seeks to represent a diversity of styles, interests, and personal histories of the clients we work with. Often described as authentic and honest, Uma carries that sensibility to each project and seeks to create spaces as unique as the environments around them and the individuals living in them. Her curiosity extends to art, history, and a well-read, well-traveled outlook on life. Uma consistently turns to new currents in American design, classic English interiors, and her parent’s birthplace of India for inspiration. Uma is recognized as a designer whose work is both innovative and can stand the test of time. Redbook magazine defined Uma as a designer who can "design a home you'll love forever." Luxe Magazine named Uma one of the design industry's "Game Changers" in 2018. Her work is both timeless and current, and it is this quality Uma's clients love best about the spaces she creates for them. Before launching her design business, Uma worked as an acquisitions editor in book publishing and as a photo editor for a women’s fashion magazine. She studied design at Parsons and NYU, and has done Ph.D. work in communications and culture at the University of Illinois. Her broad intellectual background continues to inform her design work.

We struggled for years trying to decorate our home ourselves. After several somewhat failed attempts we decided to ask for professional help. We feel so fortunate to have found Uma. She listened to what we really wanted - the kind of feeling you would get when you walk into our house. We also asked her to work with several pieces we already had and the way she mixed and matched everything was amazing. She pushed us a little out of our comfort zone too, which is exactly what we needed and wanted, but all the while staying in tune with our personalities and style. I walk downstairs every morning and LOVE our house now. It's comfortable, warm, elegant and also kid-friendly in function which is a tall order! Uma is also incredibly professional and efficient - something I appreciate so much. It was a pleasure to work with her and I would strongly recommend her.

Uma and her team were really wonderful in helping me decorate a small awkward living space. Uma really listened to what I wanted, the needs of my family and was very open in reviewing many pictures I had pulled together to express my ideas. She has access to very talented artisians and created a really unique space. She was extremely patient and her design team offered lots of choices in various price ranges but never lost sight of the vision we had developed for the space. I would strongly recommend her.

As soon as I saw Uma’s portfolio on-line, I knew I had found the designer for me. I loved all of the rooms in her photos. Her design aesthetic was exactly what I was looking for. For our first project, I hired Uma to select window treatments for the kitchen and to design our dining room. I already had the dining room painted when we moved in, so the project entailed selecting and installing furniture, a rug, a chandelier, window treatments, and accessories. Uma and her team were a pleasure to work with. Her selections were spot on. I was very budget conscious, and where I requested a less expensive selection (e.g., the fabric for the long curtains and mirror), she always came through with a cheaper just as fabulous alternative to the original selection. I absolutely love how the dining room turned out, and the kitchen window treatments are perfect! Uma also recommended pieces to fill in the dining room, but alas my budget did not allow it. I am saving up for Uma to design our family room. After that, I’ll save up for the rest of the pieces for the dining room. Next, I hired Uma to select frames and hang family pictures along the stairway leading upstairs. I love the finished project! Every time I pass the photos in the stairway they bring a smile to my face. I have had a great experience working with Uma and highly recommend her!

Uma designed my master bedroom recently. It is now the most wonderfully serene and beautiful place. The room totally speaks to who we are and suits our needs. From room layout, furniture selection, designing custom pieces, and accessorizing and styling, the project went smoothly. I had a terrific experience with Uma Stewart Interiors and wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone!

Commented: Are the wing backs on this page available with navy blue stripes?Hi. These chairs belonged to the client and we had them custom upholstered with the stripe. A good upholsterer should be able to do this for you if you find a pair of wingbacks!

Commented: Hi, where can we buy moroccan style window shutters? ThanksHi there. I custom designed these and had them made by our in-house carpenter. We sourced the metal lattice and had him do the frames surrounding them with antiqued wood.
