George Gekas Design

George has performed major design projects for us. He is very creative and exceptional in the use of space and ergonomic layout. George excels in the design of small homes. His designs pay careful attention to the site and design a project that fits naturally into the surrounding environment. George Gekas is a brilliant designer and a source of imaginative innovation. He has seen us through three large projects: the building of our “modified-cape” style home on the Maine Coast; then the construction of a “carriage” style two-car garage with upstairs apartment; and most recently an addition to our home. Working with him is like consulting with an artist who can take your ideas from a set of words and rough sketches and turn them into a masterpiece. George knows architecture from both directions – as a builder and as a designer. He is a stickler for detail, but also has the uncanny ability to listen to each suggestion you put forth and somehow blend them into the final plan. He is a never-ending fountain of creativity and finds sincere pleasure in incorporating all the latest in construction materials and energy sources into each project. GG Design created a set of plans for our mid coast studio/shop. We were very pleased with Mr. Gekas' design which nicely incorporated elements we wanted to include. His artistic and structural suggestions reflected his long experience in the build/design profession. He presented numerous ideas which helped us greatly in our process. We were pleased with the results and are currently in the construction phase. Mr. Gekas' fees came in within budget.

George Gekas designed a three season house for us on a lake in Maine, working closely with the local contractor/builders during the construction process. He is a knowledgeable and experienced architect, but what we found most important were two talents: his remarkable design sense (from macro details of the general shape/look of the rooms and the house) to much smaller design issues (colors of paint on the ceiling, creation of storage in unexpected spaces,etc.) Secondly, we found throughout the planning process that he was able to listen to our concerns: to start with, what general hopes/aims we had for the house; and then in many more specific ways through many iterations during the gradual process of going from general overarching ideas, to their concrete realization in drawings, site plans, elevations, etc. At the end of the project, we're especially pleased by how the house works for us (and our children and grandchildren) living in it, as well as by many details about how it looks, both in the landscape where it's placed and the interior spaces . That its design was featured on the cover of "Maine Home and Design" suggests the architect's talent in building a unique and comfortable home on a highly restrictive footprint.

George Gekas has been a gift in our lives. In 2011, we purchased a tiny wreck of a cottage on a beautiful piece of land on Mt. Desert Island. There were many rigid restrictions re construction, due to the location and history of the property. George found creative and marvelous solutions to every problem. Every inch of space was utilized in the best possible way. His vision matched and encouraged our dreams. He created a magical place for us and our family, and we are grateful.
