About Us

Sears Design Group, P.A., Research Triangle based firm with offices in downtown Raleigh, was founded in June of 1979 by Dan C.L. Sears. The mission of Sears Design Group then and now is to create high quality, user-driven public and private spaces. Our goals for these projects is to reflect the environment in which they are found, be low maintenance and cost effective. The size of the firm is maintained at a level where our principals participate in all the firm's projects. These goals guide our design decisions and services proposals.

We wanted an extensive landscape design for an existing home we had purchased in Chapel Hill. The project involved the design, bidding of the design specifications and oversight of the completion of the project. We chose Sears Design Group (SDG) because of the reputation and we were not disappointed. We wanted to be closely involved in the design and SDG collaborated with us every step of the way. This was an extensive project which included a fountain/cocktail pool and utilizing as much of the property's existing hardscape as possible without impacting the look we were trying to achieve. The property is located in a gated community so the design and implementation were further challenged by community standards and the desire to coordinate with the neighboring projects. We could not be happier with the final results as well as the professionalism and personal touch that SDG provided before, during and after the project. The landscape is unique while successfully blending with the overall community environs. We have received many compliments on the landscape which, of course, go mainly to SDG.

We hired Ron Price at Sears Design to do a landscape plan because our builder, who has a great aesthetic sense, recommended him. I was initially a little worried to hire this group because I thought that some of the designs on the website looked a little cookie cutter, which was not at all the look we wanted (we wanted a cottage garden look that was lush with perennials), but I trusted our builder enough to hire Ron anyway. It turns out to have been a wonderful choice. Ron really listened to what we wanted, and treated the planning process as a discussion with us so that he could understand our vision of what would make a great yard, rather than simply presenting us with a plan based on his own vision. He was very respectful of our budget. In the end, he took our pretty vague ideas for what our perfect yard would look like, combined them with his considerable technical knowledge and aesthetic sense, helped us through the contractor bidding process, and gave us a beautiful yard that we absolutely love. The resulting yard is the opposite of cookie cutter.

My husband and I built a custom home in Chapel Hill 4 years ago. Sears Design Group was recommended to us by our architect. We met with Ron Price on multiple occasions at our wooded, hilly lot filled with rocks both large and small. Drainage issues were paramount, as was our desire for native plants. Ron's vision was quite simply stunning. We enjoyed the process of researching each plant, and 4 years on it's truly become a prophecy fulfilled. Our neighborhood has a strict architectural review board, and Ron was by our side every step of the way during the approval process for our design, using the very best water and environmental engineers for guidance with our complicated lot and water issues. Most importantly, Ron was a good friend during the stressful process of building our dream house. And he's remained a friend to this day. I wouldn't recommend anyone else for landscape architecture; Sears is THE BEST.

Ron was very helpful in allowing us to envision and select an overall plan for our pool house, pool and overall backyard landscape design project. He drew out several detailed design options which enabled us to select the one that suited our needs best. Ron was very professional and a pleasure to work with.
